geesh... Since when does eloquence equal intelligence? or long, drawn out talk mean thoughtful talk? Simplicity is key. Most of the posts that are a kazillion pages long can be summed up in a paragraph. I guess people havent learned from schooling that a simple consice piece of work will blow away a blowhard of a paper.

All I see is this.

Paragraph

paragraph

quoting

paragraph

a few more paragraphs

another quote

paragraphs again

quotes again

paragraphs

and finally bitter attack

that is all that these people who write huge essays do! and another thing they like to do which they think points out a certain part of an article, instead of using good english is use CAPITALS. capitals capitals and more capitals! oh and then they finish it all off with a ::) to rub it in. Thats intelligence ;)

You who type a lot of crap but dont put in an ounce of intelligence, you know who you are.lol

another rant completed.

notice no quotes. Notice only one big gap. Notice I always clump my ideas together. I am afraid that there are a select few here who do as I said. I have noticed many people looking at my post but not posting anything. just as I wanted. :)

Actually, all we post are letters, numbers and spaces. Accompanied by the occasional period, exclamation point, question mark or smiley.

Hmmm, why do I detect a little envy in your posts? Could it be that you do not enjoy sharing a forum with people whose intelligence level exceeds yours? Or maybe you dislike long, thought-out essays because you are utterly incapable of writing anything similar without your ideas losing cohesion?

hmm don't push it.. TMA_1 is not just speaking bullshit here... he is at the least partly right

Yes he is. And no he isn't.

(Due to your dislike of quotes, I will refrain from using them in this topic, so it's up to you to figure out what I'm replying to)

I will not state that I am somehow "unintelligent". That was a very crude remark. Lets just say that you would be surprised what good stuff comes out of my head. I am not a genius but I can hold my own. I have always been tought by my dad and tought in College that the focus of arguments is to get your point across. It can be long too. Its just that many use length as somehow a form of showing how smart they are. I could do the same if you wanted. Frankly though a quick and to the point statement that shows the exact facts is better than reading four pages that does the same. I remember a story my dad taught me. he was in Logic class as a kid going for his Masters Degree. The teacher wanted his students to answer the question "Why?" He wrote a very eloquent 6 page paper on the answer of why. He got a C. He asked the teacher why he got a C because of all his work. The teacher showed one of the students papers, he wasnt a bright student either. The student had two words on it. Why not? That is the perfect logical answer to why and he got an A. see what I mean edric?

Yes, and I agree with you on that. But you can't reduce everything to a short answer. A mere yes or no isn't enough as a reply to any question. Frankly, I don't see any useless rambling in my posts. (naturally, if I did, I wouldn't post it) I think the large size is simply necessary for me to say everything I want to say. IMO, it's insane to argue that someone's posts are too large when, in fact, they can't be made smaller without losing content. And remember: Content that might seem useless to you could be important to me or to others.

Besides, sometimes you need to be polite. For example, I could sum up this post as "I know what I'm doing. Mind your own business." I don't think that's the kind of reply you want. And it would lack any arguments to back it up.

thats the point. you think the things you say are all relavent. Go to an english instructor and he could sum up all you say into a short paragraph or a few of them. if you want i can take one of your long posts and sum it up. :)

Posted

you misunderstand, you can sum something up and just leave the important stuff there without having a bunch of pointless blather.

Do you want topics to look like this:

A: I think <insert sentence here>

B: No. I think <insert another sentence here>

A: You're wrong.

B: No, you are.

A: No I'm not.

B: Yes you are.

And so on, like your average 4 year old... It's ridiculous!

actually thats close to how a formal argument is written in the college level. this is how it looks

1st paragraph:

talk about the issues in an introduction

2nd paragraph:

talk about what the apponent believes

3rd paragraph:

Talk about how your apponent is wrong

4th paragraph:

Cite sources and information on how you are correct

5th paragraph:

conclusion

You dont even need to write paragraphs for each part. an argument can be mixed into one single paragraph.

Fine. I'll start by making a short and concise post right now:

The way I post is none of your damn business! And I don't give a damn about your opinion. You post far more pointless blather in a day than I do in a lifetime.

Is that to-the-point enough for you?

mmyes. :)

Dont be so mean man. I am not just talkin about you. Even I can get long winded. just kinda showing to work on it is all. :)

It isn't about posting short comments. It's about posting all relevant and necessary information, minus all the added info for whatever reason.

A good discussion can be enjoyable and educating, as long as you don't get carried away (such as when a topic increases with 3 topics overnight). Nothing wrong with citing theories or opinions from scientists as long as it stays with that. Most of the guys here aren't scientists themselves. ::)

1. As long as it isn't offensive to you, the old saying holds true: If you don't like it, don't read it!

2. Me and quite a few others consider all that "extra information" necessary for a good argument.

And TMA, I'm in a very stressful position in real life right now which is making me extremely short-tempered. It will be better two weeks from now.
