Just because a book is a "Classic" doesnt mean its amazing

Okay...

Me and a friend of mine at my community college talked about this. We were discussing works by c.s. lewis like "Screwtape letters" and other writings. Also about many eastern religions. Suddenly we started talking about greek works such as Aristotle and Euripides. then we started talking about plato and his works. We both agree that Plato is really kinda wishy washy. It really is odd that Aristotle is the student of Plato because of their big differences. Things that really seperate me from plato. We also talked about Daoism and eastern religions. Frankly just because a work of philosophy is really "deep" and poetic doesnt make it "great". I think that many people try too hard to read the classics in order to feel more learned. I think many classic works are wrong. There are intellectual differences and I respect that but does anybody agree with me? that many people like classic writings and like them just because they are considered intellectually amazing. see what I mean.

What do you guys think?

If I was told to read a book because it was a classic I would laugh right then and there. I read books that appeal to me - and if it is a classic I will check it out to see if it appeals to me. There has to be a reason it is a classic and has survived this long, so it's worth checking out - but not always worth reading.

A classic is something that gains popularity quite slowly. A classic is something that can withstand the test of time. Otherwise it's just old and crappy.
