abandonware. The gruntmods edition will be available again tomorrow.

"Abandonware" is a term that has no legal standing.

Basically EA doesn't care if you distribute it, but they cannot release it as freeware because they do not own the IP, or something along those lines.

Agreed, Dune 2000 remains copyright property. Downloading it illegally is piracy, regardless of whether EA are pursuing it or not. It is not considered freeware neither is it in the public domain.

I dont recall ever saying it was legal to download.

In most cases, software classed as abandonware is not in the public domain, as it has never had its original copyright revoked and some company or individual still owns exclusive rights. Therefore, downloading such software is usually considered copyright infringement, though in practice copyright holders rarely enforce their abandonware copyrights.

Can this thread be removed? It doesn't help...

how so? he wanted to know if it was legal to download. It isn't , and EA isn't enforcing the copyright. They could enforce it at anytime though, and it wont expire for a very long time.(Copyright often outlives the author in most countries)

there are still some games fron times when dune2000 was released and before , not only westwood/ea that are still , example istratosphere - knightf of the skies , is still not freeware howewer is very old game. older than dune 2000 and its RTS , made by lowbudget developper. so this is confirmed there is no legal term for abadonware/freeware dune2000 is still in hold of hands EA , they can release to public but they dont plan to do it

seriously, theres no need to say these things 6 or 7 times. I NEVER stated that there was a legal term as abandonware. I clearly defined what it meant a few posts up.

IIRC, even the Abandonia reference list of games indicates that Dune 2000 is still sold (although I don't know if this information is accurate), and if it's the case, even the "it's not sold anymore" argument doesn't work here.

Anyway, why bother with Dune 2000, better go download C&C, RA1 and TS that are completely and legally free laugh.gif

i have ra1 and first c&c on orginal CD including TS

and RA1 had some nasty bugs, in some case if you had buldings near passage for infantry , sold bulding will spill infantry to untouchable area so you wont move them either , unrepairable bridges, if one bridge that let you get out and into base is gone you are jailed forever

but there appears on RA1 thing like tornado or something because strangle huge floating ball pass throught my base shooting sparks and wiping out units and buldings

and bulding scheme/placement style is cused on dune2000

I believe they stopped selling them awhile ago, as I was one of the people who purchased the "relicensed" copies :)

Cant imagine why anyone would buy old sports games, yet the company had them listed as well.

RA1 has its fair share of bugs, but infantry stuck on impassable terrain isn't a very big deal, right? As for bridges that can't be repaired, most maps have alternate routes so a destroyed bridge does not result in complete isolation of one region from everything else.

That's not a bug, that's the Chrono Vortex, the side effect of over-using the Chronosphere (also comes in some crates as a "powerdown" of sorts).
