It's about Dune 2000.

I just got on this site as I was searching for the patch. I had thought playing online was long gone. I really want to play with a friend.

Unfortunately, just as I was trying to install the game, Vista tells me it can't run (the setup) on 64 bit. How do I get past this problem? I know there has to be a way to convert 64 to 32. There were some instructions about an old game saying to turn off one of the cores for the specified program, but I can't find it in the properties.

Pleaaaase someone tell me how to get past the setup. Birth of the Federation installed with no problems and it is from the same "era", no?

Dune2k isn't 64 bit; your Vista is. Vista seems to dislike the installation program of Dune2k, and I don't know any remedies other than trying some compatibility modes and do some Google searches.

Planescape Torment also works perfectly. Clearly 32 bit applications work, there has to be something twisted about this setup not working. Maybe one of the modders could change the setup file someway? Otherwise, in a few years, Dune 2000 would be gone for all of us!

I found that Dune 2000 MAY be 16 bit, if what it says on the bar of the screen is to be taken: (attached jpg), but maybe games like Planescape are 16 bit too.

I have searched and found that Vista no longer supports 16 bit programs as XP did, and I also read that a solution is yet to be programmed.

You could try to run the installer in a virtual Machine. Once it is installed, you copy the installed dir to your Vista OS. The installer does nothing more but extracting CAB files into the appropiate directories.

I have some good news. Somebody on another forum suggested I try the game from [*deleted by mod*]

After I extract the archive, it works (no movies and version 1.02). This means DUNE 2000 WORKS ON VISTA.

Of course, this is a cracked version. I couldn't patch it successfully or run rotorzconnect because it only pasted some files with no install. It seems an install is needed, not just the files.

Somebody pleaaaase patch thet setup file.  :'(

I have edited out the link as it offers full downloadable software which is in many countries still consider piracy (and against the forum rules here). Although Dune2000 might be considered abandonware by some it's not by me.

Nice to see you got a working version.

Although I agree with Stefan's suggestion. Install Win98 in virtual machine, then use the legit and full installer to play Dune2000. :)

A cracked version is not exactly what I was looking for. I was somehow hoping to get past the install. I wanted to play it with a friend on the net, otherwise I've already played it too much to want it anymore.

So how do I go about the virtual machine thingy? ??? I wouldn't want to go on trial and error when I can get a decription. It might yet prove more troube than it's worth.

I have a laptop and a second computer, both with XP, so I can use my genuine game for lan. I intend that if I am to play on the net, I am to use my Vista computer, not swap computers.

For the virtual machine part. Use VMWare or Microsoft Virtual Machine (as examples) and install a new copy of Windows 98 or XP in that virtual machine. Then you use that to play / install Dune2000.

Another thing you will find out, Dune2000 requires IPX for network games. Which is no problem for WindowsXP. Although Vista officially doesn't support IPX.

If you don't like spending time on this ... it's gon'na be a long weekend. . . :)

Ok, I installed Virtual PC 2007 and successfully installed Windows XP inside. I found it very funny actually, how it believes it is running on a real machine and promotes itself. I still have to test its connection to the internet, install Dune 2000 and then connect to server. I will make sure I don't get viruses by running every site and program through my real machine. What's that with Dune requireing IPX?

Do you know how I can uninstall Microsoft Virtual Machine? I installed it before Virtual PC 2007 because I took your advice literally, then I couldn't find it anywhere to run or to uninstall. The closest things are in Add/Remove Programs (the now "Programs and Features"), something "Microsoft Visual J#.NET Redistributable Package 1.1", another network thing, then two MSXML things (both starting MSXML 4.0 SP2 ....).

Unfortunately, today I am going away for a week, then I have to study for a university session. I will have a lot to do until the 12th of september.

i can only assume the D2K setup is a 16bit module to load a 32bit program...

vista-x64 dont like 16 bit stuff at all(phased out completely)

same goes for ipx/spx protocals as gryphon said

so that means dune2k wont use lan mode in vista

however i havn't tried this with d2k but heres a tip:

if you can use a virtual pc or a dual boot into a win9x/xp system

1)install the game on the virtualos or other os

2)run regedit after its done(on the 9x/xp os) and look for the hklm/software/westwood/dune2000 keys

3)right click,export the key

4)right click, edit the key to show /hklm/wow64node/software/westwood/dune2000 or something similar..

5)run the intended OS and Import/run the reg key you edited

basially its just exporting the key and adding 'wow64node' to the target line.

make sure to have the disc in the same drive letter as the other os would expect..

it would be easier to just play it in a virtual machine or winxp though.. theres always a way..

I am having trouble with Dune 2000 under my virtual Win XP. It installs fine, but when I tried to run it, it waits a long time to play the intros, then waits forever to show me the main menu (it's black screen). I did use the final uk patch and maybe tried to install directx 9 before I ran it, I don't know if it would have worked without.

Trying to use radeon drivers, I saw that the virtualization automatically sets it back to default. Maybe there was some trouble with directx?

I have also bought a new dual 64 with Vista and am trying to run Dune II on it...and I mean it seriously  ;D  it always crashes with "This system does not support fullscreen mode. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application." sign

any ideas?

Virtual PC or VMWare is your friend!

I also have a Vista machine. I'm playing Dune2 on a virtual PC (dos boot) and Dune 2000 on virtual XP. Both of them worked great. The only problem is that the scrolling on Dune2000 doesn't work too well. Are there any hot keys to scroll the screen?
