ping problems

hi, i ve been wondering about this ping kind of thing .. i mean my connection speed is the same

my game settings are the same but suddenly i get the ping jumping from 210 to 800 suddenly

and it stayes That way for a while then it changes back to normal..

i want to know is there other factors that effect ping?? and why this is happening,,, if possible,

Are you downloading? Maye it is a program that gets/sends info over the net every so often. Like an instant messenger updating the avatars or something. :/

ping measures the time for a request to get acknowledged from the destination. It can be affected by anything between you and that destination. So other computers sharing your link, bad connections between both ends...anything really.

Some variation over broadband isn't unusual.

some actionpoints for you and your system:

shut down msn/icq/irc/and so on

windows updates can cause a bandwith usage wich is quit high...

shutdown other programs, wich are not used for the game, so you overall performance will also gain a little...

give your brother/sister/father/mother a big slap when they are downloading/webcamming or whatever while you are gaming...

just for my information, whats your connection speed??

no i live alone  ::) and i know everything about not running other programs while playing..

well my guess its something with the connection it self even if the speed is the same

at the local aria.. i mean it can have bad communecation for longer distance or something..

or its something wrong with the game it self which is a copy really because i playe fear combat

and i don't have the same issue.. thx anyway

Well, if you are pinging a server, it can include the time a server takes to respond too..

sp1cy, if memory serves me right you live in a country that's not famous for fast internet connections. (unless you are a bank or like Phoenix mentioned are using a webcam)

And as your ping to other servers depends on all systems between you and the other host I wont be supprised it's your ISP or something in the middle. :)

To test it you can ping a local ISP router when you have a high ping.

exactly gryphone that is what i was asking at the first place..

but the strange thing is the connection speed dose not decrease , i mean i try to resume a download

of a file and the speed is the same all the time at 25kps

so my question was can the connection have a bad ping rates even if its speed is the same??

for some kind of broadband complications that i don't know about???

coz even when i upgraded my connection to 486k i still having this ping jumping up from time to time..

My best guess would be that your connection is a little on the lower side of the required spectrum for gaming...

And that you have a line which could be overbooked by your ISP, so that you share the speed with the whole neighborhood..

I think those 2 guesses come close..

i think i discovered something by luck. i was having one of my ping fevers ( a jump of high ping)

then i disabled upnp at the routers,then i disabled internet gateway in my networking services.

and then i logged in and the ping came down and stoped jumping up..

i tested the connection 3 times by reversing what i did and it gave the same results every

time. is this possible or am just hallucinating

And about that uPNP that can cause some weird actions sometimes..

keep UPnP disabled at your router for a few days to see if your ping times stay steady.

well .. after testing.. upnp have nothing to do with it...

i still cant understand it... like for ex :

my ping at the server were i playe bf2 should be less than 250 ms or i get kicked..

my ping is about 220 at this server with a 256/64 k adsl

when i upgreaded my connection my ping didnt get lower and it still go up most of the day time

to more than 250... at night it gose down to 210.. i dont undestand why.. the net speed

is the same. i test it lots of times.. is the ping somthing defrent from net speed??

can somone tell me?

the netspeed is your connection speed (for example 6000/768 ADSL, or like yours 256 down /64 up)

the ping time is the time a certain host needs to reply on your request.

so you are A, the game server is B. The time the ping takes from A to B and back to A is your ping time.

It could be that the server you are playing on is in America...

and you are in the middle-east for example..

Then you have a long round-trip time. and therefor your ping is high(er). It COULD be solved by getting a faster connection

from your ADSL provider, but sometimes it doesn't make any difference..

yes i told you my net speed is ok at speak eazy test...

First off its a variable ping, so its not a case of distance, he is after consistent ping, regardless of its location and actual ping.

Secondly, getting a "faster" package speeds up certain aspects of the connection, but not necessarily all aspects. They may "up" you from a 256/48 to a 4/512 but your ping can stay the same, you simply have more bandwidth to download more at once, but not get a quicker reply from any remote destination.

Two different things. We need to work out why the ping is slow at times. And Spizo, the net speed isnt the same, there is an ever fluctuating flow of traffic moving about (which usually is stable) but there are peak times and non peak times (usually when those damn Americans wake up  :P).

In relation to why it's slow at some times. The internet is like a highway, getting congestion from time to time. Which usually is arount 7, 12 midday and just before 5 on corporate networks. :P

yes i know those guyes.. i tested with them befor and they tell me my dsl is ok..

but it dosnt need any tweaking because at my speed there is nothing u can tweak

just get a dos box in front of you,

type (without the quotes) " tracert IP address of the gameserver

copy the output when finished, and post here.

as gryphon said line sharing is indeed a good possibility.

this means that your line is shared with some others in the street/neighbourhood. and when all users in your neighbourhood are online (what is likely around 1900 hrs till 2200 hrs) your connection speed can drop.
