Weird or Humorous Foreign Customs

No, I see the real advantage in tracking money, it's just that the tracking of paper money through the serial numbers, at least through retail stores, it's not believable (I work in the back office of a Publix, where we handle the money).

"is that what all Americans sound like to foreigners?"

To me, it's a sort of sliding scale: On the furthest extreme, you have the strong southern accents, whereas accents from other  parts (with a few exceptions of distinctive ones, like Brooklyn) sound less strong. A little closer to 'normal' (i.e. BrE) is Canadian, though some dialects of CaE have their own peculiarities.

Therefomre, when a Briton attempts an 'American' accent, they will attempt to make their accent as different from BrE as possible: southern accents are therefore the most obvious choice.

Hmm, even I, who isn't a native English speaker, can discern many English accents. Irish and Scottish isn't hard either, especially when hear right after one another.

I can usually distinguish between most american accents, especially between southern accents and NE accents. We just do southern accents to imitate Americans because it makes one sound more... simple.
