Realizing several threads are similar to this one, but this is a slightly different angle.

a) If the game Emperor had no reference to dune, but everything else was the same would you still like and or play the game (AKA no dune, fedys, etc; but they were called something else, but all aspects of the game were the same, just the names changed mentat to advisor fremen to desert warrior; etc)

b) Is the campaigns better than on-line or is it more the on-line gameplay that you love?

Nice point of view, well I would try the game and be pleased with the gameplay and the ideas like battles in a desert planet, the scenarios and the units.

But the main reason I really like this game is without a doubt the "characters" and the story behind the Dune novels as well as the old Dune II that started my admiration for this world.

I played Battle for arrakis loved it on the GENESIS

then played Dune2000 which was nothing more then C&C re done with sand

Emp is EMP

a stand alone

I cant think of another RTS that plays this fast or has the same style of attack. I can only hope Supreme commander has some of EMP style play in it.

did I play EMp because of Dune and dune2000? NOPE

i played EMP for EMP.

but then u cant find a game anymore ,so i am still playing Zero hour, and Total Annihilation, which both have Large amounts of players and you dont wait all night and not get a game.

sorry about the babble blog

I never read the Dune books and only remember seeing a few parts of the movie.  For me it's just a great rts game because of the balanced units and excellent gameplay.  I'd still play it if it were "Spongebob, Battle for Bikini Bottom".

Well, I've read all the Dune novels, and seen all the movies and mini-series. that's what got it in my hand when I walked out of the store with it when it first came out. But I knew very little about gaming, I never even thought about online playing. I played it a little while and didn't bother to learn, really learn, the game. Then I was thinking one day about finding something I could do with my kids. Thats what started me playing it again, I have never played any other games (perhaps that's why I suck so bad, LOL) But I really like this game, this setting, etc. I like the game play, I don't have anything to compare it to, but I like strategy games. So far this has provided many hours of fun. So I would say it's both game play and Dune reference, that's probably why I play Atr. all the time, if you read the book you can't help but hate the Hark, lol

Ohh, and I found that I like playing humans way better than the AI. (although it sucks constantly getting your ass handed to you by a fourteen year old, especially when it's your son, LOL)

so to possibly paraphrase; it was the reference that made you look, the gameplay that kept you here.

Yea I would have to agree with Vodoo. I read most of the books, can't say all(yet). It's what caught my interest, but the game itself is what kept me. At this point I would have to say that if there was no reference to the books I probably wouln't be here now.

So much so you dont play now ? Or do you ?

I bet for most of us, no matter what got us here (to emp) it is the gameplay that kept us here. If it was crap, I imagine I could be the biggest fan of the Duniverse and still not play it.
