Doom 3: Is it really a great game?

Well I finished playing Doom 3. I got up to about half way and stopped for awhile, then did the lameass thing and used cheats to get to the end to see what it looked like. I figured I would never really play through the whole thing because well... its really boring. On top of that, it really isnt scary. I mean it has it's moments, but usually those moments arent morbid, creepy parts, really they are just startling. It is the kind of tense jump out of your chair freak out stuff, but no dark and disturbing creepiness which I was hoping for. The graphics are absolutely beautiful, but the story and level design are just boring and repetative. Did anybody else feel this way?

Hell was a disappointment... As soon as I saw all the lame skulls everywhere I knew it wasent going to be creepy or cool in any way. damn I was hoping for a really atmospheric game.

eh... i liked it... it was creepy to me.... i had to play it in spurts.. because the content was so graphic that i was getting adrenaline overload... and it was making me nauseous (the excess of adrenaline...not the graphic content).

Overall i felt it did get a bit repetitious..... but i let myself become immersed in the storyline and i just absolutely loved the Datapads and reading them and listening to them.

I really liked the one i found on a guy in Hell.... he was so scared and frightened and depressed about the Demons chasing him but not finishing him off... like they were toying with him.

the superb graphics allowed for superb immersion... thats what the game is about... feeling like you are really there.... when i was in the medical labs and i saw the zombies in one medlab pounding on the glass door trying to get out or one was actually eating the other....or the one medlab where the zombie on fire is sceaming and chasing after you while limping just a bit... it was so realistic that it was hard not to believe you were really there (unless your comp sucks)... but that is the whole issue... you guys are saying DOOM was mediocre... but really the superb graphics made the game so immersive that it accomplished what it set out to do....because the whole time i played it i really felt like a marine abandoned by his squad and all alone in a facility with dead people....it never really felt like a "game"..... i mean even the computer screens worked realistically.

I liked Doom 3 + Exp. Usally played it late at night with headphones, lights out etc. to get the full effect.  However, after getting Far Cry I find it much better than Doom 3 for graphics and realism by far. But when Doom 3 was first released and I bought it and installed, I thought it was awesome.

i mean even the computer screens worked realistically.

Yes that was very cool peeking over a guys shoulder as he's typing and reading he's typing about you lol.

i know graphics alone wont do it spectral... but the way the graphics were implemented in this game with the degree of realism... it DOES add to the immersion... and immersion is very important.

I can relate Gunwounds, ever have a lab partner break an entire beaker full of hydrochloric acid in the middle of lab?  Thankfully no injuries (how not one shard didn't get him I don't know), and it was over the sink so it was easier to clean on one level.

I really agree with Gunwounds here.

I don't even bother to write a long post, because Gunwounds summed my opinions up quite neatly.

Thanks, Gunwounds, you're sometimes a time saver.  :)
