After getting DSL my computer is alot slower. it takes several seconds to open a folder, and easy tasks such as to maximize a thing on the menu takes time. When I see in the task manager the CPU usage is constantly at 100%...anyone know how to solve this?

I don't have much space left on my harddisk either, dunno if that means anything

I have 1GHz, 256Mb Ram and 30Gb harddisk.

I do not think it is a virus, because before I installed dsl I formated my computer and then I got Norton Internett Security before I went online for the first time. So no virus has probably got through

what is dxdiag?

about 30 processess are running. none of them take more cpu than usual. will try to defrag my pc...but I not think that will help since I just formated the harddisk one month ago.

What operating system is it ?

You say non of the processes are taking more cpu time then usual..well one of the processes must be higher then usual. If you can, arrange the process list by CPU load and see which one hovers closest to the top.

When you say you have little space left on your hard drive..how little are we talking?

With no room left for a swap file you may find that your system will grind to a halt.

256 RAM meets XP's minimum req. but the OS is very bulky, with RAM being so cheap now a days, you may consider doubling this a good investment.

Also, instead of looking under the "Memory Usage" coloumn in your task manager, look under the "CPU usage coloumn", see whats taking up the highest/second highest percentage.

DxDiag:

Start =>  Run =>  Type in "dxdiag" (without the quotes, lol) => save all information to a text file.

then I got Norton Internett Security

Norton can slow down slower ( <1gig ) systems dramatically.. could that be it ?

Can you do,or past a screenshot of what erjin999 suggested, order the processes tab of the task manager by CPU load ...
