Figure I would pass this along after the crap I just went through.

Well, I have a nice chunky heatsink/fan for my desktop and it always runs really cool for an overclocked CPU.

lol man you got some serious problems. how about just letting the cat don't come close to your pc or just find another way to keep your pc cool enough?i think any pet would be afraid of my pc anyway because of the modding  ;D

this list got one missing:

school computer used by various young adults, all bringing their cats and dogs, smoking joints during pc work and the school is located few miles away from las vegas in the desert of nowhere -> clean the computer every 5 minutes... maybe even don't stop cleaning at all  ;D

I clean mine every third month or so.

That is done by simply vacuum cleaning it. All the dust and stuff in the heatsink fins disappear this way.

As I use Arctic Silver thermal paste, I don't dismount the heatsink as it needs a couple of hundred ours of computer usage before it reaches maximum effectiveness...

But doesn't touching your inside of computer run the risk of frying it? I know I hvae played with the insides of my old compters many times. But am a bit hesitant with a new one.

I know in a computer class people had to attach a wire from their wrist (arm) to a table.

I never use wrist bands or anything like that.

The only thing you need is to ground yourself once by touching the ground pins on an electrical outlet...

After that, you're safe.

Also, don't worry about frying anything inside the computer... You won't.

If you carry static electricity, what will happen is that the unit(RAM, CPU, etc.) won't work until you've grounded yourself and touched it again. It has happened to me a few times. Works every time.

besides that newer hadware is protected for those charges. Personally I never used any of the protection stuff. . . and talking about protection. . at work we use the server's airconditioning unit to keep our soda's nice and cool. ...one of the email servers had a crashed RAID array due to overheating just last week .. . no realy. . it did.

But as a good techsupport moderator I have to emphasise the fact that you don't ever, NEVER EVER touch electrostatic devices without protecting yourself and the device.
