I don't want to see a unified Europe ever.  I want to live in the United Kingdom, England, not Sector 14B AKA That island north of france.  Norway, Switzerland and Lietchenstein have done the clever thing and stayed out because they would have to sacrifce their better living conditions and wealth for some Sicilian Farmer, or sometime in the future a Romanian Orphanage.

I'd like to see some way of working together while still remaining very much independent. Rather than amalgamating into one great big body (look what good that did for other states...) I think we should remain seperate countries with seperate ideals and foreign policies. But there should be an element of control in the UN, to stop something stupid happening.

But I never thought I'd see the day when a rabid conservative learned the meaning of "too much patriotism"...

I'm glad that you quoted his comment, for posterity's sake. I can't believe that I just read that.

Germany doesn't belong to Security Council. They are economically strong, but not in military. Such country should have at least a strategic nuclear armament, that means not a few torpedoes or small bombs, but something, what can destroy anything anywhere. Country, which can't even make a tactical airstrike on the other part of the world, shouldn't have a strategic word in world's security, it is simply unable to maintain it.

But still, while UN has only minimal power, it doesn't matter. And also, as now comes new Frankish empire named EU, such discussion loses sense.

Hey, no one is forcing you to join the United Europe! If the rest of us Europeans want to join together, why is it any of your business?

If you don't like the idea of a unified Europe, stay out of it. But don't tell us what to do.

As for the living standards, you will probably find that the short-term decrease is more than compensated by the long-term increase. Sicily and Romania, for example, have a huge agricultural potential. And last time I've been to Britain, it looked like you really needed some way to lower your ridiculous food prices.

Five permanent members in the Security Council is too many. Since the UN SC has only 15 members at any given time, many national interests are not represented. Therefore, to have yet another nation as a permanent memebrs decreases the overall level of representation in the SC. As of right now, the fact that the ten non-permanent members rotate regularly provides the SC with as much impartiality as possible, since these constantly changing national views provide very few nations with a permanent "favor" within the SC. To have Germany become a permanent member would simply increase the current tensions within the council that prevent it from effectively working. Especially if Germany were also provided with the veto. Even then, it would cause more trouble than good to reform the Security Council's structure.

I agree. The Security Council is in many ways a relic of the Cold War, and it's about time it was reformed to reflect the new realities of the 21st century. I believe there should be permanent members, but no one should ever have veto power.

There should be something like GDI, special UN reaction force, which would be under direct command of General Secretary. If there must be sovereign states talking about use of own weapons, it loses sense as everytime one of them will veto any strategic decision.

I actually agree with Anathema. Germany is an economically powerful country, but military wise it is rather strong as well. It has some realy great military programs, good armor devisions, a powerful airforce and some of the best trained soldiers. Also, probably because Netherlands and Germany are so much alike, i like their mentality and i think they can have a good influence in the council, representing OUR opinions too.

Well that's just my opinion. But i would even prefer to have germany in that council OVER GB and France.

Germany can't access tu the security council becaus they haven't Nuclear weapon (and they are right !)! The first check is this ! No NW, no place in SC ! But now, is it necessary to have Nuclear Weapon ? No !

So, I'm agree to make Germany a new member of this council ! We can make a German-French Lobby like un UE ??? ;D

I'm joking of course (not for Germany, for the Lobby !) ;)

Well, that wouldn't be a bad idea. The thing is, that the terrorists don't act openly, they don't recruit openly, nor do they take over countries like the Brotherhood of Nod does.

What I was thinking, was something in the form of United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO) from Deus Ex. Game or not, this directive gives them orders to act both domestic and globally, to act and prevent terrorists from achieving their goals.

Of course, in Deus Ex, UNATCO is corrupted. But there are no wars anymore, no major ones. Rather, wars have become more "silent". You don't even declare war anymore, or at least, the terrorists don't. They just come. Therefore, just like Edric said, UN needs to be reconfigured to adapt itself to the present day problems.

That's nearly true, but at least have that THEORETICAL potential. Tough we can't say there are no succesful UN missions in the world, see Eritrea, or Golan Heights...

That game I'm playing now. Just today I watched a nice discussion. JC: "Majestic 12 is behind this." NPC: "You mean European Union".  ;D

It is amazing to see that some details of the game (the attack of the Liberty Statute = WTC,...)are very close to reality. :O

I would be very pleased to meet JC Denton.  ;D

It's a good thing we have only one vote for two countries because we have to agree.

I admit it could be a clever US strategy: adding even more division in the european leader countries by gifting them with more votes.

because everyone knows: when europeans kill each-other, US is always the winner.
