Vanny's first rant... I think.

Hokay, so, as some of you may know, I recently got a job as a security guard. Because I'm new, I am working primarily at the Corel Centre (in case you don't know, this is the home of the Ottawa Senators), where I search people's jackets for contraband, and confiscate said contraband. I am not directly employed by the Corel Centre; I am employed by Iron Horse Security, whose clientele includes the Corel Centre. Now, according to my briefing manual, "contraband" is:

-Alchohol

-Drugs

-Weapons (chains, knives, screwdrivers, etc)

-Water bottle lids (a capped bottle can be thrown like a football, obviously causing injury. Also, this allows us to detect gin or vodka in the place of water).

-Food and/or drinks aside from water and Tim Horton's coffee.

As opposed to throwing contraband out, or returning it to their car, they can have the item(s) checked with customer services, which means I call a Corel Centre staff member to escort them there. Now here's what pisses me off: I've had a few occurrences where I've found a baggie of chips, peanuts, or whatever (I will sometimes allow small items of food, such as a chocolate bar, through, but I never allow bagged foods), and the Corel Centre staff members will, instead of escorting them to customer services - instead of doing their jobs - they will let them through!

First, this makes me personally look like some kind of food nazi. This also doesn't help the image of the security guard as a whole. But what really ticks me off is that this teaches people (kids, especially) that they don't have to follow rules (which are, by the way, printed of theier tickets) that they find inconvenient.

I agree that sports arena food is expensive. I agree that it sucks that you can't get fresh fruit or home made trail mix there. But I am employed to enforce the policy of the owner of the Corel Centre, and it bugs me when I end up looking like the fool for doing so. I have enough problems with dipshit parents who teach their kids to violate policy. I don't need that crap from people who if anything, should be more rigid about policy than I should.

Am I wrong?

Have you tried talking to your security boss and asking him to have words with the staff manager ?

I think that's a personnel problem.

No! Your not wrong , if that's what's in your job duties, you are only doing your job.

I think jobsworth would be a good character for you to see, it was an English comedy program a long time ago on TV. ;)

No, Vanguard you are not wrong. You sound like a conscientious employee and I know you will go far in whatever you do with your attitude. Like Atomic Mitten said I would bring up the problem with your supervisor. If your supervisor ignores the problem, then I think you have a major problem. At that point you may have to let the company that hires your security company know what's going on. Finally, if they ignore it, then maybe the rules need to be changed. You may also want to consder at that point whether to look for a new job or simply ignore the minor infractions like everyone else even though it bothers you. It would bother me as well.

Yah, tonight when i saw rotk i took a canned pop in with me. (not buying form the theatre as the prices are outrageous.) But canned pop is also illegal in my province. :P

Your doing your job. Some terrorist could put a bomb in an apple, or fertilizer in a bag of chips...

if a terrorist buys food from the building he cannot make a bomb.

But yah do your job, do it well and get rewarded.

I hope to see a sens game sometime in the future. maybe I'll see you there. ;) and then you can confiscate my canned pop. ;D

Vanny I like your new (or at least new to me) avay ... it reminds me of my martian uncle.

I agree, I think by the others not sticking to the contraband rules that I assume were laid out by Corel Centre, it does show a negative trend of bending/breaking the rules to the younger generation. Food Nazi or not the rules were laid out for a reason, so it should be enforced. But that is just my take on things.

D-Ciddy ;^}~
