You should check the settings of the on board sound card in the BIOS. It's possible something got disabled by accident. Please attach a copy of DxDiag and if you know the motherboard make and model please post that as well.

Also make sure you don't have any digital sound devices plugged into your usb port. I have an mp3 recording device that shuts off all sound to the speakers when i hook up the digital pc link into the usb port.

DXdiag: "Error: Problem getting extra sound info, result code = 0x8878000a (The result failed because DirectSound resources, such as the priority level, were already in use by another caller.)"

That's not the problem.

Yeah a lot of the motherboards come with a disk with bundled software. PC Cillin is a virus scanner. Does the disk have anything else on the label? Where did you get the PC? Was it from a retail store or online? On the PC case is there any markings?

LOL it might! Sorry for the late response a buddy called right in the middle of our discussion. What I am really trying to find out is the type of sound chip you have. Is it an AC97? You might be able to find out in the BIOS screen. There are also programs that can identify your hardware other than DxDiag. Atomic Mitten keeps mentioning this utility :

http://www.aida32.hu/download

Run that and see what it tells you.

Up to now I seem to have the same SIS chips on my pc, I suspect you have a PC Chips motherboard,

If you install AIDA32 check out all the sub menus.

If you scroll down each sub menu page, it should tell you about any problems.

In the right hand page list.

Do you have a mic plugged into your soundcard ?

If so remove it and see if it works then.

PC chips motherboards have the jack soldered the wrong way around for the mic.!

Otherwise you could try a dirty great rock ! ;)

To enter the BIOS re.boot whilst holding down the delete key.

Press and hold down !

Once there, go through the menus with the esc key and look for AC97 sound .Check to see if it's enabled. If it's not highlight it and press the + or - keys to enable it.Press esc and then F10 click on enter to save settings and re.boot.

You an nyar supply me another if it doesn't? ;)

I have an old 350 Mhz K6-2 you can have with Linux and Windows 98 installed if you want it. You have to pay shipping though.

I couldn't find the motherboard type and make either on my other computer. I mean that it is hard to find out what you have. I can't find the type and make on my computer as well. There seems to be no way to find out, except to see the receipt.
