Well, today was the last day of voting, for or against the changing of currency, in Sweden. As the topic says, the majority, or well, 56%, voted "no". This means that we will probably wait another 5 to 10 years before another "election", but it is confirmed somehow that we will change to euro in 2013, no matter the results.

Your comments.

i wish the USA would declare war on Canada and turn Canada into the 51st State

that way me and all Canadians would no longer have third-world currency. best possible thing for Canada would be if the USA took it over and force their currency upon Canada

Umm, were at 71 cents to their dollar, I think that is a good comparison. But yes Canada and U.S. should join forces and become a super super power.

And that was kinda offtopic like this post is.

I have mixed feelings about the Euro. At first I thought it was a great idea, being able to spend the same money in other countries and that sort of thing. Then everything in stores got more expensive, sometimes it seemed as if they charged the same amount of euros as they did in guilders (and the guilder was less then half the value of the Euro). But it's mostly the fault of the shopkeepers themselves.

What did you vote btw?

First of all, I'm "only" 17, yet. My birthday is in two days, so well, I guess I was born two days too late (hey, be glad that you are alive!). ;)

Second, I too have mixed feelings about all this. On one side, it is good for the whole of Europe if we cooperated. We would become an economic alternative to the US. Besides, cooperation in other areas are also vital, for the good of all.

And then there are the negative things, of course. We don't know who is controlling all this. Is it really the six persons in Brussels? Or someone with power? I don't know. But if I did know that the people indeed had power over the currency, the developments and etc, then I would vote "yes" - if I could (the requirements are that you have to be 18 or more to vote, oh, and a citizen).

So, it really depends on who's in power. Just like we can have communism if everyone are honest, we can have a cooperation in Europe. But, until we know, I will be a sceptic.

The Euro is something you have to experience for yourself to apreciate what it means.

I lived in Germany until July of last year, so I was there for the introduction of the Euro.

Overnight many firms in Germany discovered like in Holland, Belgium and France that they could make a killing by just changing the DM signs into euro signs.

The Euro being almost half of what the DM was worth, makes it really easy for them too.

People automatically think that the've got less money in their pockets, so the retailers happily obliged them.

In rip off Britain I shudder to think what would happen here, there are already too many scams happening, they don't need any help from the European Central Bank.

Germany thought it would solve their recession problems,

how wrong they were, with 4.5 Million unemployed, they are really having to tighten their belts, by cutting health budgets and benefits.

Prices in Germany though have never been lower for many items, because people just can't afford them any other way, and German firms seem on the whole, to be far more morally supportive.

Unlike Britain where the rich are still getting richer and the poor are getting even poorer.

Britain is getting more like a third world country everyday,it's a slow decay, that creeps up on people, they are so used to it now, that they can't see what's happening.

For one, I got the shock of my life, returning here!

My first thought was, what the hell are they doing.

my second thought was the realisation that they are simply milking the country for all it's worth and sod the next generations.

They won't be around to suffer ! will they ???

P.S. Newt, who do you mean an anti Euro government, there is no opposition in this country, now is there ? and Labour just because they are making noises doesn't mean they have any intention to join the euro, they are just doing what they are best at, sitting on the fence, until someone pushes them far enough, so they have to make a choice.

Then they will turn around and say well that's what the people wanted ! so wake up England before it's too late.

Well you've got a bit of a problem as the fourth largest economy won't join your little Federation.

Meh. France and Germany are larger economies then the UK. So are the US and China, so the UK doesn't come earlier then the 5th place.

Looked up a few interesting (?) facts about 4 European countries at the CIA factbook.

GDP

Netherlands 434 billion (well what can I say, we're a tiny nation)

France - 1,54 trillion

UK - 1,52 trillion

Germany - 2, 184 trillion

GDP per capita

Netherlands 26,900

Germany 26,600

France25,700

UK 25,300

Population below poverty line

Netherlands N/A %

Germany N/A %

France- 6,4 %

UK- 17 %

Unemployment

Netherlands - 3 %

UK - 5,4 %

France - 9,1 %

Germany - 9,8 %

I used to think the British were pretty wealth people...

EDIT

Happy birthday Dude Doc! ;)

Yeah and ? they don't stand a chance of being taken seriously. Be honest with yourself.

Britain used to be wealthier than it is today, The cause, successive Governments have ruined the country, instead of keeping good ideas and improving them, they have always scrapped the other parties policies.

Their a bunch of children, no insult to children intended.

They couldn't run a prize draw ! ;)

There's the door...OUT!

None of you know anything about Britain.

Britain has got the fourth largest economy. Its larger than France's ;D

The Conservatives are the most popular party in Britain ::)

It most certainly is not. France's economy is bigger in terms of GDP (if you are using another criterium state your source). Japan's economy is bigger to, so you're #6 at best. Plus, in my data I stated the stats for the United Kingdom, Britains economy would be even smaller.

I think AM knows his share of England, seeing as how he livers there ::)

Not only did you "forget" China, you basicly ignore the data I posted and present your baseless view of the world as crystal clear evidence.

I've got to hand it to you Newt, that post of yours just blew me away. You totally convinced me ::)

;D You Europeans know nothing. Just because you can't have your Federated States Of Europe... ::)

UK has a larger economy than China and I has had a larger economy than France after France joined the Euro.

I see Newt that you've run out of arguments, wonder why?

If you make sweeping statements then you should know what your talking about !

Have you ever lived in another country ?

I have lived in three different countries.Including England where I was born !

I will be returning to mainland Europe as soon as possible ! I only came back because of my Mothers health.

I also served in the British Army ! but I don't believe in blind patriotism. If you'd ever been out of the U.K.

you'd know why.

I live in one of the filthiest cities in England, which also has the highest crime rate, so I have good reason to moan.

Maybe where you live it's better, but don't put things down until you have tried them. ;)
