You may wish to try step number 2 listed in this message :

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JFWlite/message/68819

I have quoted it here (and bolded the step):

Subject: APPS: ZoneAlarm crashes-VSMON

Yes, I had this exact problem. I solved it with solution No. 2 below from ZA

support. It loads True Vector driver (vsmon) after Windows and ZA have

loaded instead of before. Have not had the problem since.

------

9/6/01 - Response from Zone Alarm technical support

1) Adaptec CD can cause startup timing issues with the TrueVector service.

We suggest that you set Adaptec CD to not load automatically at startup. It

will start automatically when you start the program.

2) You can change the timing of the TrueVector startup while still starting

it automatically. In order to stop True Vector from running as a service at

startup:

- Clicking on Start/Run and type the following (The actual directory name

may be different on your system) :

Windows 9x[me=number6]: c:windowssystemzonelabsvsmon -uninstall[/me]

Windows NT/2000 : c:winntsystem32zonelabsvsmon -uninstall

This will change the startup timing of the True Vector Service and driver

(for the more technical - this basically sets it to start as a program

rather than a service).

3) Sometimes there can be a conflict with too many things running at

startup. In order to not have ZA/ZAP load automatically at startup:

- Click on the ZoneAlarm "Configure Button".

- UNcheck the "Load ZoneAlarm at startup" checkbox.

- UNcheck the deskband if you use it (and UNcheck the box to Show Shell if

you have one)

- Reboot

- You will need to launch ZA/ZAP manually when you want it to start.

If you continue to experience difficulty, the issue may be a problem with

TrueVector or its database files. Please follow the instructions at the

following page to refresh the database files:

Maybe reinstalling Norton if it is handy, then updating norton after it is installed. Thats if it isn't much of a problem to do.

Better yet, What does the exclamation mark say when you move your mouse over it? and if you double click it, what happens?

Try right clicking on the icon and see what your options are.
