No-rooms and no-ships in the prequels

Is it just me, or does anybody else have a problem with this? First of all the richesians were not interested in this sort of invention. I dont see why one of their debunked scientists came up with it. Second is, it is way too early in the novels and there havent been enough steps taken in order for these "no" technologies to be of any important use. I think it was a horrible addition and really cheaps out the Duniverse. What do you guys think?

Excuse my Freedom, but &$#&(@$%*#! My internet messed up, and I lost my previous message.

Anyway, I agree with you. It seems to me like the authours just wanted to tie the whole idea into their own books.

(*SPOILERS FROM THE SECOND TRILOGY*)

I always figured the no-tech was invented during the reign of Leto II. We know the Ixians had this tech (or a primitive version thereof) at this time. Also, Leto's dictatel-memoirs were stored in a lerge no-chamber, if I'm not mistaken. Perhaps that was just a DE thing.

Anyway, I like to think that the no-globe on Gammu/GP was secretely constructed by "House Harkonnen" - a faction formed by Harkonnen loyalists after the fall of the House itself, and had lived on in name only during Leto's reign. Leto could most likely "see" it's contruction, but allowed it to be built, knowing it would be of use to Teg, Lucilla, and Duncan (although he could have only seen Duncan). Any thoughts on this?

yup, in GOED it talks about the finding of the rakis horde, and the archeologists that found it. I always figured the same too. That was the first time I really heard of the no-room concept.

How could the false house of harkonnen build a no planet with the technologies they had? It took years upon years even for the ixians to invent it. You could be right though, could you explain a bit more though? just to make sure i am not lost here.

I think they couldn't come up with a better idea so they had to make one up that is quite impossible, although it makes you wonder how they got Harkonnen stuff on something from so long ago.

Me think it was a bad idea.

ALthough I was flicking through GEoD and a no-room is mentioned in the intro - the Ixian dictatel for the stolen journals was there. Does that push its invention date back a bit further?

But yeah, I was thinking of this the other day. The whole Harkonnen no-globe is kinda tricky. Perhaps tis like (I think it was) TMA said a while back, things sometimes get forgotten and rediscovered. I mean think how much Holtzmans equations were used? Tis kinda like Einsteins Relavtivity, it's still being scrutinised, tested retested destroyed reconstructed even after nearly a century. Something so culture-altering as to relegate missiles and bombs below swords and kindjals will undoubtedly be scrutinised again and again, so maybe it could have been found once before the ixians did.

Of course, that is if you believe it was the modification of Holtzmans equations that produced notechnology. Which is from the prequels. hmmm.

But yeah, tis a tricky one. Is this related to that arafel remark Leto made before he died?

??? The Ixian Dictatel was where? With the stolen jornals? Leto II used the Dictatel.

Andrew: The Stolen Journals (i.e. those stolen by Siona a the beginning of GEoD) were created by the Dictatel machine.

Anyway, my thoughts was that the no-tech was invented by the Ixians. During Leto II's reign (or possibly even after his death, somewhere in that 1500-year interim between GEoD and HoD), the Harkonnen Remnant managed to buy the materials for a so-chamber from the Ixians, using money slowly saved up for thousands of years.

the problem with a no-planet is this.

to hide a planet's strong and weak forces, you would have to have the power of a sun almost. You have to counter balance billions upon billions of forces that would be working against you. it would seem like a godlike feat to me.

I think that Brian Herbert has nothing to do with the Duniverse, no more than any other fanfiction. B.Herbert and his X-Files writer are perhaps nice fanfiction novelists exploiting a gold vein of fans loyal to Dune, but what they're doing is not the Duniverse more than if I wrote nice little stuff.

The only thing I'm interested in is FRANK Herbert's personal notes about prequels or whattever.

TMA, when you say hide the strong and weak forces, do you mean military ones or the fundamental physical forces?

How does a no-field actually prevent detection. I thought I just made it invisible to (a) vision (b) wave-detection, e.g radar © prescience. Using the different power settings, you'd be able to control which was operating at any one time.

SPOILER

I may be wrong on this one but as I recall HoD has the no-room on Gammu in it, and it clearly shows signes of the Baron. anyway I don't really like the preq's anyhwo :P

I disagree with you TMA. I think that the no-ships made the prequels much more fun to read. made them more exiting. and also the fact that the harkonnens possessed such a technology is cool.

I beleive that is the point. They couldn't come up with there own ideas/story's so they made up the whole no-technology so the books would be good.

Hmm... I made a post. I hit the "post button" - yet no post.

The Andorian Mentat is perplexed and enraged.

Anyway, here goes take two:

Namp: They contain evidence of perverts - the skeletons in the tubes; the pornographic clock, and so on - but it doesn't mean it was the Baron's doing. For all we know, these "traits" could have been passed down though the Fallen House's leaders, perhaps in homage to the Baron himself, or (more likely) the Baron's perversion was passed down to those who followed him, and then to their heirs, and so on.

The problem with that no-ship story in House Atreides is that it already existed.

2 sides are in a sort of war. And a conspiring force makes it look like the one side attacked the other.

From what do we recognise that?

Exactly: Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

It happens the same way. With a cloaked ship!

And the reason why the no-ship can't be reproduced is also quite lame.

I'm sorry. But that was something I did not like about the prequels

I don't think so, we know his direct heirs was all killed on arrakis, and I don't think Muad'Dib would have just led Giedi Prime be Giedi Prime afterwards. I think he led the enslaved planet loose.

Also I don't remember any other Harkonnen being mentioned as being as sex fixated as Vladimir, but I could be mistaken.

If you had read my first post, you would know what I was talking about.

Sure, the Atreides (actually, it would have been House Halleck) had freed the slaves of Giedi Prime. But that doesn't mean everything that was Harkonnen would have been wiped out. There would have been officers and vassals of the Harkonnens who would most likely have escaped.

you're right about House Halleck, forgot about that one, but I don't believe that any Harkonnen sympathizers would be spared, and I don't think they just made up the no-room, anywho that's just my opinion.

But in one of the prequels (House Atreides i think). Didn't Chobyn build a no-chamber for the Baron?

Yes, I beleive, the one that is in an original Dune book. ( no spoilers hehe)
