Nick
Ive read the original series by Frank Herbert, and have recently begun to read House Atredies. At one point the Beast Rabban hunts and kills a worm, which brings me to thinking..... why didnt the Harkonens try too kill all the large worms? Anybody have ideas? GhostHunter
Because if you kill all the worms the spice goes away. If the spice leaves then you lose spac travel, life extension, better awarness and much more.
nampigai
they didn't know that at that time.
Nick
Which leads me to another question, if they cant travel long distances without the Spice, how did they get to Dune in the first place? or is that explained at another time? GhostHunter
They COULD travel long distences using space engines like you see in Sci-Fi shows. Problem was that they weren't very powerful and traveling from planet to planet could take months. Further more, the engines only went so powerful before the human body couldn't take it anymore and foresay on a machine one could (Proven in BJ). nampigai
This is when I should tell you to read BJ but I wont, IMO it sucks....
Tio_Holtzmann
Don't forget as well as the worms providing spice they also provide another chemical, vital to mankind's survival, on Arrakis - oxygen. The air must flow before the spice can I'm afraid..... ;-)
Anathema
Remember that HA was written by KJ Anderson and Herbert junior, so not everything is going to make sense.
Vanguard3000
Also, consider the size of Arrakis. Hunting and killing ALL the worms would be even more difficult than hunting the Fremen.
Nick
Well they think the Fremen are only a few people back in that book anyway. and the Book House Atredies doesnt even cover any Harkonen thinking of the possibility seeing then you wouldn't loose any harvesters and they didnt know the Worms made the spice it doesnt totally add up too me....Oh and also, I thought it took them around 80 years to travel to the nearest system without being able to fold space... Colonel_Worf
The Fremen were in large masses then. They've been on the planet since before the Butlerian Jihad.
ilexatrei
Teh essence of the book being called House Atreides is taht it completely focuses on House Atreides and their thinking. They are the main characters that the book focuses on. Not House Harkonnen. That's for the 2nd book in teh series.
Emperor Harkonnen
no you are wrong. I haven't read House Atreides, but I have read House Harkonnen. In that book there are lots of stuff about the Vernius family on Caladan. and C'tair at Ix. There is equally much about the different houses. BUt in House Corrino there is very much about Corrinos
Colonel_Worf
The feel of the books changes with the titles. Atreides is very homely, Harkonnen is a darker, creepier book, and Corrino is very regent... in my opinion.
