I agree with Nema on this one. Don't EVER say nig...(you get the picture), but don't say African-American either. (unless you're actually talking about an African living in America...)

A strange trend in this is that the more politically correct we become, the less accurate the terminology is. The most common term, African American, used to represent black people in the US isn't technically accurate...they may be a mix of origins or races, they may have come from Jamaica, or even Canada if their family escaped during the slave years.

I'm often accused of being insensitive, even bigoted, until I explain my positions; If you are going to refer to Black people as African-Americans, why not refer to white people as Euro-Caucasian-Americans? How far back do you go? When does it become silly?

If I included my family history up to my great-grandparents, I would be a Dutch-Russian-Irish-English-Scottish-Spanish-American-Canadian Caucasian Canadian.

What the heck's the point of that ??? It's not like I'm going to raise hell by being called Canadian or white...

It may not be easy for you to understand do history on African-Americans in the United States of America it will begin to make more sense (maybe). I agree with what you say about usage of maybe "African-American" but for a group of people who were not allowed to have their own idenity during their enslavement that is in a way reclaiming what was denied like their heritage. And if 'black' is to represent the people then that would also be incorrect same as with 'white' but old habits die hard.

All this sad joke over "correct saying" is just killing our dictionary. We have a word: neger, and I won't call them black or dark people. Hm, and about "afro-american" form, how should we call other, non-american blacks?

Are you saying people do not have the right to be identified by their racial background as oppose to a so-called color being their indenity? Cald I know of the word you speak neger (meaning Negro which wouldbe correct). There is too much use of color (IMO) if it is to identify someone of a racial stock (not nationality) then why not African-American?

To acknowledge their color, I say white, tan, brown, or black. But if it comes with confusion, like a white guy standing next to a chinese person, I then acknowledge their nationality - which is based upon observation. All at once :)

lol, what about Michael Jackson (however he spells his name)

what color is he? (lol, j/k j/k, i suppose that was a little harsh)

but, ya i think that political Correctness was originally a good idea, and then got turned into something way too obsessive
