Is anybody else tired of so many fps games using thsi engine? its like, people come up with a story, add a few neat things like lightsabers or phasers and there ya go! brand new game! I mean isnt this going overboard? I get tired of these games so fast. As a matter of fact, quake 3 arena wasnt even that good in the first place. It is just so boring. anybody agree?

well, but i gotto admit. The engine is realy good, and everytime again the engine is updated... besides it was the first engine that could actually create round curves. Besides, Jedi Knight 2, Quake 3 or Voyager: Elite Force, are all different games. And some of them like Jedi Knight 2 have good story as well.

And last but not least, they often adapt the engine so much that they can fit the game. Like the old Quake3 engine was not build to render large 3d landscapes. However MOHAA, JK2 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein changed the engine to fit it. (well RTCW is also from ID, it's just an updated quake3 engine)

First off, realize that Quake3 was made primarily as a demonstration of the Q3A engine, so that other companies could buy it. But yes, it sucked hard. Unreal Tournament (the original; UT2K3 is nothing special) is much better.

Anyway, I thought RtCW and JK2 were really good, actually. RtCW had some very atmospheric moments (the crypts were much scarier than anything I've seen in System Shock 2), and JK2 had the lightsabre and force, despite it's uninspiring weapons and an overused soundtrack.

I didn't think Elite Force was that bad either, but that was because I liked the hand phaser (I rarely see a continuous-fire weapon like it), and some of the levels were decent (i.e. the I.S.S. starship from the Mirror Universe).

dont you see though? WIthout the lightsaber and its moves, and the force powers, it owuld be quake 3 arena. Same with elite force. They were fun for a bit but got really boring. RTCW was freaking boring.lol It was repetitive.

Okay. I was just making sure you're beef wasn't about the whole genre.

Anyway, what are some of your favourite FPS's?

And what makes you see JK2 and Q3A as so similar, pray tell? Personally, I was really pissed when I saw that the "flechette" gun was just a flak gun, and the repeater was almost identical to that scavenger gun from EF.

hmm I love Operation IGI, Rogue Spear, Thief II, stuff like that.

The reason why is all those games systems are the same. The only thing different are the weapons and the textures. Its like playing the same game but with a different story attatched to eacha nd with no creativity involved. know what I mean?

Thief 2 rules. How far are you in it (or have you beaten it)? Have you tried System Shock 2?

Some of my favourite FPS' are:

-CyberMage: Darklight Awakening

-System Shock 1/2

-Thief 2

-Half-Life

-Klingon Honour Guard

-Strife

-The Dark Forces series

-Unreal

-Morrowind (if you count it as an FPS. I don't, but whatever)

-C&C Renegade (because I'm playing it now, and it seems good)

I liked Rainbow 6 too (I've never tried it's sequels), but it was way too short. My friend and I beat it in about an hour or so. never played IGI though.

I think I get your beef with those games now though. It seems to me like you like the games with a lot of objectives. More simulation-like than just action shooters. Am I correct in saying this?

Only Return to Castle Wolfenstein from those Q3 legion I've played was stable (what means it crashed just once a day). Jedi Knight II wasn't so bad if you played single player, but all others (including Quake 3: Arena) are more unstable than Windows Millenium. What is bizzare is that every thing was crashing other way - Medal of Honor in mission loading, JK2 in weapon changes etc.

well if that's the same, then tell me the difference between q3a and UT. If you said Q3A and Elite Force were same except for textures and stuff i agree. But JK2 is totally different. Anyway, why the engine is so much used cuz it's so good. UT's engine couldn't match it, and none of the other engines could. The lithtech engines are just not realy good for real FPS games. They are good for games like Thief where you have to stalk, and hide in dark corners. But not for real FPS fighting. The Q3A engine had much more capabilities.

And about Q3A being sucky, i'm not realy a fan of it either. However it was pretty popular, especially cuz the game played so relaxing... main reason for that was the great engine. UT's engine just isn't so fluid

1. Quake 3 engine works smoother on graphix cards that support T&L (all Geforce cards for instance do)

2. The engine can handle better lightning effects and sharper graphics

3. Like i said, it is the first engine that can make REAL round objects
