Nyarlathotep Posted December 29, 2001 Author Posted December 29, 2001 Post from Digital9x:****Thanks to the person that responded to my help call earlier. I went to page 23 and saw that some of the listed conflicting software was also installed on my machine (Clone CD, etc.)I tried un-installing those programs, re-launching the game, but still, Game.exe crashes. So, I figured I'd do the ultimate - reformatted my machine. Now, here's what I have installed.- Windows 98- Internet Explorer 5.5 (so that I could get back here)- Intellipoint Mouse 4.0 software (I have the Intellipoint USB Explorer mouse)- 3D Banshee drivers (newest ones)- Soundblaster Legacy PCI (newest drivers)- and that's it, other than the game and the version of Direct X that it installed.I'm still get that blasted Game.exe/3D failure message. Have I just narrowed it down to my hardware being the issue? Note that all version of C and C work superbly on this machine, along with other games like Unreal Tournament, and Quake 3.I was told to attach my EA file the next time I submitted a comment on here. Below, you will find the info from it.Thanks for your time and patience,Digital9x (cj_malone@yahoo.com)----EASy System Summary--------------------------------------Video Card : 3D Blaster Banshee PCI/AGPVideo Driver : 3dbbw9x.drvDriver Version : 4.10.01.0105Sound Card : Creative Sound Blaster PCI128Sound Driver : ctpci9x.vxdDriver Version : 4.12.01.2016DirectX : DirectX 8Operating System Windows 98 4.10.1998----EASy System Output---------------------------------------Computer Name : AopenBIOS InfoName : AwardVersion : Award Modular BIOS v4.60PGMAPNP : Manufacturer : (Standard system devices)CPU InfoCPU Count : 1CPU Type : 451 MHz GenuineIntel Pentium III6 7 2RAM : 191 MB Total106 MB FreeVirtual RAM : 1856 MB Total1811 MB FreeOperating System : Windows 98 4.10.1998Default Browser : Internet ExplorerVersion : 5.50.4522.1800Temp Directory : C:WINDOWSTEMPSize : 2 KB----------------------------------------------------------------Display Info--------------------------------------------Number of Displays : 1Current Mode (Primary) : 1152x864 32Refresh Rate (Primary) : Optimal refresh ratePrimary display deviceDescription : 3D Blaster Banshee PCI/AGPManufacturer : Creative TechnologyVideo Memory : 16 MBMain Driver : 3dbbw9x.drvVersion : 4.10.01.0105Provider : Creative TechnologySupported Display Modes| 16 | 256 | 16 bits| 24 bits| 32 bits---------------------------------------------------640 x 480| * | * | * | * | * 800 x 600| * | * | * | * | * 1024x 768| | * | * | * | * 1152x 864| | * | * | * | * 1280x1024| | * | * | * | * 1600x1200| | | | | ----------------------------------------------------------------Sound, Video and Game Controllers-----------------------Description : Creative Sound Blaster PCI128Manufacturer : CreativeMain Driver : ctpci9x.vxdVersion : 4.12.01.2016Provider : Description : Creative Sound Blaster PCI128 Legacy DeviceManufacturer : CreativeMain Driver : Version : Provider : Description : Creative Gameport JoystickManufacturer : CreativeMain Driver : vjoyd.vxdVersion : 4.08.00.0400Provider : ----------------------------------------------------------------Direct X------------------------------------------------DirectX InfoVersion : DirectX 8DirectDraw InfoVersion : 4.08.00.0400Certified : Not certifiedDirectSound InfoVersion : 4.08.00.0400Certified : Not certifiedDirectPlay InfoVersion : 4.03.00.1096DirectInput InfoVersion : 4.08.00.0400----------------------------------------------------------------Drive Information-------------------------------------------CDRom Info----------------------------------------------Cache size : 1238 KBAccess Pattern : Quad-speed or higherDrive Letter AVolume Name : Type : FloppyFile System : Total Space : 0.00 KBFree Space : 0.00 KBDrive Letter CVolume Name : CJMType : FixedFile System : FAT32Total Space : 7.85 GBFree Space : 7.05 GBDrive Letter DVolume Name : THEBIGDRIVEType : FixedFile System : FAT32Total Space : 27.94 GBFree Space : 4.49 GBDrive Letter EVolume Name : EMPEROR1Type : CDRomFile System : CDFSTotal Space : 639.69 MBFree Space : 0.00 KBSec/MB : Test not performedDetected Speed : Test not performedDrive Letter FVolume Name : Type : CDRomFile System : Total Space : 0.00 KBFree Space : 0.00 KBSec/MB : Test not performedDetected Speed : Test not performed----------------------------------------------------------------Monitor Information-------------------------------------Primary monitorDescription : Plug and Play MonitorManufacturer : (Standard monitor types)Max. Nyarlathotep Posted December 29, 2001 Author Posted December 29, 2001 Digital, looking at your problem, I would say first try to lower your resolution settings. Set your desktop resolution to 800x600 16bit. Also, try a lower refresh rate, default if possible. Then try to run the game.Another suggestion is to download and re-install directX. This because you've updated your video and soundcard drivers.I've been playing around with an old system and had the same problem as you now have. When I lowered my desktop settings to 16bit colours, it worked. Cannot create 3D device means that somthing is bothering your videocard/videocard driver.Let me know how it went !Nyar...
Guest digital9x Posted December 29, 2001 Posted December 29, 2001 Okay, here I am, and here's my EA file. Note: I finally just reformatted my machine to toss out the idea of conflicting software (such as CloneCD and Nero 5.5).Installed software:- IE 5.5 (So that I could get back here)- Intellipoint 4.0 Mouse software ( I use the -USB Intellipoint Explorer mouse)- 3D Banshee newest drivers- SB 128 PCI sound card (newest drivers)- DirectX version offered by the game- and finally, the game itself.----EASy System Summary-------------------------------------- Video Card : 3D Blaster Banshee PCI/AGP Video Driver : 3dbbw9x.drv Driver Version : 4.10.01.0105 Sound Card : Creative Sound Blaster PCI128 Sound Driver : ctpci9x.vxd Driver Version : 4.12.01.2016 DirectX : DirectX 8 Operating System Windows 98 4.10.1998----EASy System Output--------------------------------------- Computer Name : AopenBIOS Info Name : Award Version : Award Modular BIOS v4.60PGMA PNP : Manufacturer : (Standard system devices)CPU Info CPU Count : 1 CPU Type : 451 MHz GenuineIntel Pentium III 6 7 2 RAM : 191 MB Total 106 MB Free Virtual RAM : 1856 MB Total 1811 MB Free Operating System : Windows 98 4.10.1998 Default Browser : Internet Explorer Version : 5.50.4522.1800 Temp Directory : C:WINDOWSTEMP Size : 2 KB----------------------------------------------------------------Display Info-------------------------------------------- Number of Displays : 1 Current Mode (Primary) : 1152x864 32 Refresh Rate (Primary) : Optimal refresh ratePrimary display device Description : 3D Blaster Banshee PCI/AGP Manufacturer : Creative Technology Video Memory : 16 MB Main Driver : 3dbbw9x.drv Version : 4.10.01.0105 Provider : Creative TechnologySupported Display Modes | 16 | 256 | 16 bits| 24 bits| 32 bits --------------------------------------------------- 640 x 480| * | * | * | * | * 800 x 600| * | * | * | * | * 1024x 768| | * | * | * | * 1152x 864| | * | * | * | * 1280x1024| | * | * | * | * 1600x1200| | | | | ----------------------------------------------------------------Sound, Video and Game Controllers----------------------- Description : Creative Sound Blaster PCI128 Manufacturer : Creative Main Driver : ctpci9x.vxd Version : 4.12.01.2016 Provider : Description : Creative Sound Blaster PCI128 Legacy Device Manufacturer : Creative Main Driver : Version : Provider : Description : Creative Gameport Joystick Manufacturer : Creative Main Driver : vjoyd.vxd Version : 4.08.00.0400 Provider : ----------------------------------------------------------------Direct X------------------------------------------------DirectX Info Version : DirectX 8DirectDraw Info Version : 4.08.00.0400 Certified : Not certifiedDirectSound Info Version : 4.08.00.0400 Certified : Not certifiedDirectPlay Info Version : 4.03.00.1096DirectInput Info Version : 4.08.00.0400----------------------------------------------------------------Drive Information-------------------------------------------CDRom Info---------------------------------------------- Cache size : 1238 KB Access Pattern : Quad-speed or higherDrive Letter A Volume Name : Type : Floppy File System : Total Space : 0.00 KB Free Space : 0.00 KBDrive Letter C Volume Name : CJM Type : Fixed File System : FAT32 Total Space : 7.85 GB Free Space : 7.05 GBDrive Letter D Volume Name : THEBIGDRIVE Type : Fixed File System : FAT32 Total Space : 27.94 GB Free Space : 4.49 GBDrive Letter E Volume Name : EMPEROR1 Type : CDRom File System : CDFS Total Space : 639.69 MB Free Space : 0.00 KB Sec/MB : Test not performed Detected Speed : Test not performedDrive Letter F Volume Name : Type : CDRom File System : Total Space : 0.00 KB Free Space : 0.00 KB Sec/MB : Test not performed Detected Speed : Test not performed----------------------------------------------------------------Monitor Information-------------------------------------Primary monitor Description : Plug and Play Monitor Manufacturer : (Standard monitor types) Max. Nyarlathotep Posted December 29, 2001 Author Posted December 29, 2001 *lol*...I'm quicker then you thought. Already copied your stuff here and made a suggestion as well... :DNyar...
Guest digital9x Posted December 29, 2001 Posted December 29, 2001 Okay, this is what I have done now.1. Set resolution to all possible modes.2. Changed bit color to all possible modes.Mode Resolutions: 1152/8641024/768800/600Color bits:32 true color24 true color16 high color256 colorResults - same error "Can't Create 3d"Notes: Monitor does react as if it wants to go into 3D mode by the resetting it does, and the clicking noise. Also, I went through all modes at "optimal refresh" and "adapter default" modes.Heading to get the most current DirectX version possible. Will report once I install and attempt all modes again.
Nyarlathotep Posted December 29, 2001 Author Posted December 29, 2001 Hmm...I'll be awaiting your update...Nyar...
Guest digital9x Posted December 29, 2001 Posted December 29, 2001 Okay, I'm back. DirectX 8.1 is now installed.Steps taken:- Installed DirectX 8.1- Rebooted as stated by installation.- Ran Dxdiag - all tests successful- Tried all resolutions and color bits as I listed earlier.Result:- Can't create that blasted 3D device.Gotta be able to laugh about this to get through it.Digital9x
Nyarlathotep Posted December 29, 2001 Author Posted December 29, 2001 Ok, thanks for the update.I'm getting back to you..Nyar...
Guest digital9x Posted December 29, 2001 Posted December 29, 2001 Okay, I've done a few more things, but still don't have luck with getting the game to start. 1. Right clicked My Computer2. Selected Properties3. Click on Performance, then Graphics.4. Changed the slider to "no acceleration."5. Rebooted.6. Noticed that my web-pages flicker when scrolling.7. Tried to launch game.8. Screen didn't refresh at all, and I got that the original Windows error box look with the details button.Stated error:GAME caused an invalid page fault inmodule GAME.EXE at 015f:00407001.Registers:EAX=00000000 CS=015f EIP=00407001 EFLGS=00010246EBX=00000000 SS=0167 ESP=00dafc38 EBP=bff92be9ECX=00000041 DS=0167 ESI=0258cc30 FS=2defEDX=01ff85b4 ES=0167 EDI=00000000 GS=0000Bytes at CS:EIP:8b 08 ff 51 4c 8b 86 2c 01 00 00 8b 8e 3c 01 00 Stack dump:00000000 0258cc30 02843010 00809830 00000001 004175b4 00000002 00000000 0258cc30 00dafca4 005b770b ffffffff 004d6a0c 00000230 00000022 00000320 Thought maybe that info might be of use.Digital9x
Nyarlathotep Posted December 29, 2001 Author Posted December 29, 2001 What happens when you change it back ? Do you still receive the error ?Nyar...
Guest digital9x Posted December 29, 2001 Posted December 29, 2001 Yeah, I get the same error. I worked my way back to the right, one notch at a time followed by a reboot, until max acceleration was once again selected. Still, no luck.I did just stumble on a DOS file that was enclosed in a zip file of the newest drivers for my 3D banshee. I flashed the BIOS of the Banshee card, but still see no luck with the game.
Guest digital9x Posted December 29, 2001 Posted December 29, 2001 I noticed that some of the responses to this same issue was to change video aperture (spelling) sizes. My 3D Banshee is an AGP card, if that has any importance.I noticed that inside of dxdiag, the video driver is "unsigned," but I got it straigt from Creative's website. When I press Cntrl Alt Del, I have three items listed.1. Systray2. Pointer3. Explorer
Guest digital9x Posted December 29, 2001 Posted December 29, 2001 BTW, I'm willing to install PC Anywhere, and allow you to take a look around if you'd like.
Nyarlathotep Posted December 29, 2001 Author Posted December 29, 2001 I think we'll manage the way we are going right now. You may try the AGP thingy in the BIOS, who knows. In the meantime, I'm going through some leads. I'll let you know if I've come up with something.Nyar...
Guest digital9x Posted December 29, 2001 Posted December 29, 2001 Sure thing, not every I open up my machine to a stranger out on the net, but with the help you've provided, that built up some trust with me.I'll check back in a few and see if you posted anything new. Going to toggle the aperture sizes around.
Guest truemouse Posted December 29, 2001 Posted December 29, 2001 i hope this guy likes the game after all this!
Guest digital9x Posted December 29, 2001 Posted December 29, 2001 Yeah, if it's like that of C and C series, I'll love it. I've just never ran across a game that would not work on my machine until this one got to me.I went surfing the net a bit more, researching my Banshee card. The 3dfx site had Voodoo graphic drivers available for my card. So, I installed them and rebooted. I lost a view controls of the card, but Dxdiag let me know that it liked the drivers for the card anyway. The game still does not launch. I even went and re-installed directx 8.1, and still no luck. That new Star Wars game is starting to look mighty good about now.
Nyarlathotep Posted December 29, 2001 Author Posted December 29, 2001 I'm glad you're happy, but Sniper, don't post here if you haven't anything of value to add please...Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted December 29, 2001 Author Posted December 29, 2001 Digital, do you still receive:"Stated error:GAME caused an invalid page fault inmodule GAME.EXE at 015f:00407001."Or is it still just the "Cannot create 3D device" ?Nyar...
