Post from Digital9x:

****

Thanks to the person that responded to my help call earlier. I went to page 23 and saw that some of the listed conflicting software was also installed on my machine (Clone CD, etc.)

I tried un-installing those programs, re-launching the game, but still, Game.exe crashes. So, I figured I'd do the ultimate - reformatted my machine.

Now, here's what I have installed.

- Windows 98

- Internet Explorer 5.5 (so that I could get back here)

- Intellipoint Mouse 4.0 software (I have the Intellipoint USB Explorer mouse)

- 3D Banshee drivers (newest ones)

- Soundblaster Legacy PCI (newest drivers)

- and that's it, other than the game and the version of Direct X that it installed.

I'm still get that blasted Game.exe/3D failure message. Have I just narrowed it down to my hardware being the issue? Note that all version of C and C work superbly on this machine, along with other games like Unreal Tournament, and Quake 3.

I was told to attach my EA file the next time I submitted a comment on here. Below, you will find the info from it.

Thanks for your time and patience,

Digital9x (cj_malone@yahoo.com)

Digital, looking at your problem, I would say first try to lower your resolution settings. Set your desktop resolution to 800x600 16bit. Also, try a lower refresh rate, default if possible. Then try to run the game.

Another suggestion is to download and re-install directX. This because you've updated your video and soundcard drivers.

I've been playing around with an old system and had the same problem as you now have. When I lowered my desktop settings to 16bit colours, it worked.

Cannot create 3D device means that somthing is bothering your videocard/videocard driver.

Let me know how it went !

Okay, here I am, and here's my EA file.

Note: I finally just reformatted my machine to toss out the idea of conflicting software (such as CloneCD and Nero 5.5).

Installed software:

- IE 5.5 (So that I could get back here)

- Intellipoint 4.0 Mouse software ( I use the -USB Intellipoint Explorer mouse)

- 3D Banshee newest drivers

- SB 128 PCI sound card (newest drivers)

- DirectX version offered by the game

- and finally, the game itself.

Okay, this is what I have done now.

1. Set resolution to all possible modes.

2. Changed bit color to all possible modes.

Mode Resolutions:

1152/864

1024/768

800/600

Color bits:

32 true color

24 true color

16 high color

256 color

Results - same error "Can't Create 3d"

Notes: Monitor does react as if it wants to go into 3D mode by the resetting it does, and the clicking noise. Also, I went through all modes at "optimal refresh" and "adapter default" modes.

Heading to get the most current DirectX version possible. Will report once I install and attempt all modes again.

Okay, I'm back.

DirectX 8.1 is now installed.

Steps taken:

- Installed DirectX 8.1

- Rebooted as stated by installation.

- Ran Dxdiag - all tests successful

- Tried all resolutions and color bits as I listed earlier.

Result:

- Can't create that blasted 3D device.

Gotta be able to laugh about this to get through it.

Okay, I've done a few more things, but still don't have luck with getting the game to start.

1. Right clicked My Computer

2. Selected Properties

3. Click on Performance, then Graphics.

4. Changed the slider to "no acceleration."

5. Rebooted.

6. Noticed that my web-pages flicker when scrolling.

7. Tried to launch game.

8. Screen didn't refresh at all, and I got that the original Windows error box look with the details button.

Stated error:

Yeah, I get the same error. I worked my way back to the right, one notch at a time followed by a reboot, until max acceleration was once again selected. Still, no luck.

I did just stumble on a DOS file that was enclosed in a zip file of the newest drivers for my 3D banshee. I flashed the BIOS of the Banshee card, but still see no luck with the game.

Guest digital9x

I noticed that some of the responses to this same issue was to change video aperture (spelling) sizes. My 3D Banshee is an AGP card, if that has any importance.

I noticed that inside of dxdiag, the video driver is "unsigned," but I got it straigt from Creative's website.

When I press Cntrl Alt Del, I have three items listed.

1. Systray

2. Pointer

3. Explorer

BTW, I'm willing to install PC Anywhere, and allow you to take a look around if you'd like.

I think we'll manage the way we are going right now. You may try the AGP thingy in the BIOS, who knows.

In the meantime, I'm going through some leads. I'll let you know if I've come up with something.

Sure thing, not every I open up my machine to a stranger out on the net, but with the help you've provided, that built up some trust with me.

I'll check back in a few and see if you posted anything new. Going to toggle the aperture sizes around.

Guest truemouse

i hope this guy likes the game after all this!

Guest digital9x
Posted

Yeah, if it's like that of C and C series, I'll love it. I've just never ran across a game that would not work on my machine until this one got to me.

I went surfing the net a bit more, researching my Banshee card. The 3dfx site had Voodoo graphic drivers available for my card. So, I installed them and rebooted. I lost a view controls of the card, but Dxdiag let me know that it liked the drivers for the card anyway.

The game still does not launch. I even went and re-installed directx 8.1, and still no luck. That new Star Wars game is starting to look mighty good about now.

Posted

Digital, do you still receive:

"Stated error:

GAME caused an invalid page fault in

module GAME.EXE at 015f:00407001."

Or is it still just the "Cannot create 3D device" ?
