Acriku
Hey, a while ago I booted up my computer and found a screen saying something like this: Cannot find device file. The windows registry or SYSTEMS.INI file refers to this device file, but file no longer exists. C:WINDOWSSYSTEMVSHINIT.VXDPress any key to continue...When I hit the any key, it boots up as normal and goes on its merry ways. But when this happened, the registry was backed up from a previously saved back up, a while ago, and now a lot of my programs installed after the backup was made do not work, or work but cannot be uninstalled, etc. Anybody know where I can find this file to replace it, or have any idea why it happened in the first place? Virus maybe?
Gobalopper
Do a search for that filename, there are a few sites that might tell you what it is from. It might just be from a program you uninstalled.
Acriku
I'll try that, and I remember distinctly that I have not installed or uninstalled any programs prior to the booting up. And even then, doesn't it ask to remove any file that might be shared by another?
gryphon
Did you have a version of McAffee virus scan ones ?If so, try to delete the gerestry entry linking to it.
number6
Here's a link from MS:http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=280135They step you through editing the registry. You should also check your system.ini file for the device "VSHINIT.VXD" and rem out the line. I believe you rem out lines in ini files with a ";" in front of the enrty. Better yet just delete the offending line from your system.ini file.
gryphon
Was the problem solved after your reboot last night ?
Acriku
Yep, thanks :) It does not go to that screen anymore, but the damage, sadly, was already done. It imported my backup reg file that screwed up my registry, heh it's all messed up :)
