MASH: Special Edition DVD. What better time to watch THE anti-war movie?

Whats that? theres no connection between MASH and Dune? I beg to differ. Does the name Rene Aberjonis mean anything to you?

Anyway, as I had recently bought the MASH special edition DVD with some money I'd managed to save on books and since it took up msot of my spending money, I've spent the night wadding through the DVD (well, all right, I also stayed in because of the words "Techno Club", can you blame me?). I really enoyed it. The DVD's enhanced quality is incredibly apparent (especially if you view the featurette comparing the previous video version and the new DVD version, yeesh, I can't beleive the difference betweent he two!) and it being wide screen is another huge plus. I wish there was also a feature that let you view the wide screen and pan and scan version at the same time, so I could see exactly what I missed durign past viewings of the movie. That'd be enough to shut up the "I don't want black bars on the top and bottom of my screen!" people for good.

Anyway, I seem to be rambling around messely about stuff that doesn't directly relate to my point, even though I don't really ahve a point at all, jsut like the movie. So I'll try and get back on track.

The movie itself is as great as it's always been. Not having seen it for I dunno how long, I picked up on stuff I had missed before. Like all the different conversations you can follow whenever there's a scene in the mess tent or operating room, for example.

The special features are prety good. I've already mentioned the conversion featurette. There are also four documentaries, each of which has really good things about them, but also tend to use the same interviews with the cast and crew over and over again. If you can sit through the repetition, though, it is really worth it. Especially the behind the laughter documentary, or whatever it is called, because most of it focuses on actual MASH units, with interviews with doctors and nurses. They also interview a university professor of Korean History, and compare MASH with real-life MASH units, how it got things right (like doctors being able to get away with stuff that would land a normal man in a jail for 6 months) and thigns they got wrong (like there being so few Koreans in the unit).

Other features include a horrible (in every way, but, then again, what do you expect? It was the 70's) trailer, stills, directors comentary (haven't listend to yet), audio clips from the movie, and a spanish trailer (last two are easter eggs I didn't bother with).

All in all, Ir eally enjoyed it. Except for the damn box. It's hard to get the DVD's out and in it without almost breaking them.

Did you know?

MASH was originally rated X.

It was the first movie to use the word "****" (heh, the dentist told a 49er that he was going to knock his ****ing head off, and the 49 didn't like it too much. As you can see whent he play begins).

It is only because of two French umm... how shall I put this... friends of FOX's president who previewed the film with him that the operating scenes were left in the movie.

After it crushed Catch-22, Altman posted a baner in his office saying "Caught-22".

The first thing Altman did when he was hired to direct was try to get Sutherland fired.

One quarter of the way through production, Sutherland and Gould tried to get Altman fired, because they thought he was insane.

The writer (last survivor of the hollywood ten) absolutly hated the film because virtually allt he dialogue was improvised, they only used his script for the structure of the scenes. He didn't ahve a problem accepting the oscar, though.

There, now that I've rambled on way too long on a topic no ones likley to read, it's time to go to bed.

that means region one ex, not that it is compatable with video game players:) Any region one DVD can play on any region one DVD player.
