Missions speedrun eligible for public verification at SDA

Hey guys,

I have submitted my mission runs to the well known http://speeddemosarchive.com where people submit their games that they tried to complete as fast as possible and we could use some more verifiers. The verifiers job is to make sure that A: there is no cheating, B: the run meets play quality standards, and C: the run meets audio/visual quality standards.

More information about the verification itself can be found here: https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/verification_guidelines.html

And after registration you can comment on the run itself on this page: https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/dune_2000_available_for_verification_2014.2.3.html

There are 2 more weeks to submit verifier's opinions.

The goal here is also to attract more people from different sources to be interested in Dune2k.

So any effort will be appreciated, thanks :)

Does Dune 2000 have a mission timer on the score screen? I remember from viewing the Starcraft runs that speedruns for games that have game speed settings should be judged on the ingame timer, because it adapts to the game speed you play on. Notably, on the Starcraft one, this meant that after the mission, the video always contained a few seconds of the score screen to show that timer.

Without timer, I assume that'd mean you should play on the default game speed.

its possible to add, but most missions only have it for  limited time, if at all.

Nyerguds: Yeah, playing on max speed

Gruntlord6: It would be great to add option like that.

its pretty simple and easy to do, if the mission doesn't already have a timer set it to a negative value in the mission editor and it will count in the negatives, effectively becoming a timer.

The timer IS affected by game speed, so if he's playing on fastest speed the timer wont be accurate. This is the exact same issue we had when adding a timer for multiplayer matches, to count 8 minutes. We had to set it to 19 ingame minutes to get 8 real life minutes.

They wanted it to be affected by game speed though, that way its accurate to the speed hes playing on.

That's the whole point. You can't really claim you're doing a speedrun of a mission if all you're doing is playing it at a higher game speed. Of course that means it'll be finished faster, but that doesn't mean you used tactics to specifically get through the mission faster... all it means is that you played on a faster game speed. It kind of defeats the point of doing a speedrun.

For example, here you see my 5 minute speedrun of C&C1's GDI mission 13. The video is 2:30 long because I played on higher game speed.

Now, I don't think it'd be in any way called "beating" my record if someone did the same thing on even higher game speed, and produced a 1 minute video from that.

I've seen other speedruns of the mission that deploy their base there and start building orcas, and they still take a load longer according to the ingame timer. So no matter their game speed, my method is still faster.

(Note, people have done better runs of my method by now. But only using my method :P)

FunkyFr3sh: Not until Riot apologizes for being a dick :D

Nyerguds: Doing a speedrun while having faster game speed could hypothetically have it's own category. Just because the game runs faster doesn't mean you won't die from it being too fast and unable to handle the controls. Unless the mission is way too easy and AI is easily defended. But the main goal is to play on max in-game speed without any speed alterations (Funky got some). Sometimes the game slows down (much more noticeable on multiplayer) or you can mistakenly go to game menu, then the in-game timer would come in handy. And the best would be if it shows exact play time at the score screen.

Well, in C&C1 that's not possible, since maximum game speed removes all internal delays and runs the game at the highest speed it can get out of your CPU. Meaning it's always either unplayably fast, or choppy when lots of stuff on screen slows it down. :P

And really, as I said, increasing game speed gives little real value to a speedrun. I find it much more interesting to see micromanagement tricks to get through a mission's objectives earlier in the mission, than to just see someone rush giant armies at it but with heightened game speed.
