Bit more of an update on my EVE experience.

I'm beginning to get used to the interface, now, so it seems less 'clunky', as I put it before.  Haven't tried other resolutions yet (the text is small enough at 1024x768) but I'll see how it goes.

I've decided that I want to mine, because combat isn't something that I'm going to be interested in for a while yet (translation: my ship is crap, please don't kill me).  I've managed to get me a nice mining frigate, and a decent mining laser.  Now... could someone please tell me how the hell I find a nice area to mine in?  The only place I've found so far is the Veldspar field in the Rookie Training Area. :D

So, yeah... any tips? :)

In any solar system right-click anywhere on the void around you and in the menu that opens, look for asteroid belts. Select one and select "warp to". Once there look for what type of asteroid you want to mine. Veldspar is most common and profitable in secure areas. Look for "Concentrated" or "Dense" or "Rich" Veldspar. The yield is higher. Also in these asteroid belts you'll most likely encounter pirates. But you can take them out without any problems even with the first laser weapon you get when you start the game. If they prove more of a challange, just warp out of danger to another asteriod belt, or to a station.

PS: what is your name in-game?

@Gunwounds: man, when are you online? I see your headquarters is somewhere else, not in Inos, Ison..  whatever...

LOL... dude do exactly what the email says.  I said that you need to get a good standing with the agent in that email... getting in good with him will allow you to access agents near my HQ... the agents around my HQ are too high level for you to use... you need to use the one i told you about and then i will tell which agent to go to next after you get some experience and standing with that agent.  The reason i want you to experience the agents is becuz they are a good way for new guys to make money and get combat experience.  You arent ready for real PvP yet.

And yes to mine you must go to an asteroid belt and target an asteroid.  My character can mine down an entire asteroid in about 6 minutes  ;D  The technology curve and learning curve is extremely steep in EVE.  You guys got a long way to go... but thats the whole fun of it.  There is alot of amazing shit you guys havent seen yet! ;)  BTW have any of you seen a Battleship class sized ship yet?

OMG 1024 x 768 resolution? ...that low? ... are you kidding me?  :-X   Anyways there is a way to enlarge text.. so that shouldnt be an issue.

Get that resolution up there!!... although you might not be able to cuz your computer might choke... but atleast try to see how high you can go.

BTW my ingame name is "Xors"

I m pretty sure of this -> The best qualityperformance is 1024 rez...

Almost NO1 plays a game at 2048rez...becuz its crazy!

bwahahahahahahaha.  Ok sorry had to laugh.  1024 rez is for noobs.  1600 x1200 is for serious gamers... and 2048 is for the hard core peeps like me who have the ubah computers mon.

Don't have a widescreen yet.  Still got my trusty 17 inch CRT here, but I increased my resolution to 1280x1200.  Seems to provide the space I need without having to strain my eyes too much. :P

And there's not a game on the market today that could make my computer choke. :P

I'll get a new screen soon. Until then it's 1024x768 or me  ;D.

About the mining: I was doing some run-ups to an asteroid belt. Meaning got here, mined went back to the station, sold the shit, went back. At some point two dudes with mining barges came. The asteroid belt was finished in about 1-1,5 hours. I was like "whoaa" when I got there at some point and there were no more asteroids. LOL

@Gunwounds: yeah, I'm doing the jobs...

Here is a two page article discussing the most important qualities of EVE.  Very cool read.

http://www.ogaming.com/data/3673~eveonlinenow.php

ALSO EVE IS SWITCHING OVER TO A DUAL CORE 64 BIT CLUSTER AS WE SPEAK AND IT WILL ALLOW THEM TO TRIPLE THEIR CAPACITY!!.  They should be done by 2AM EST.  I am sooo psyched !!

QUOTE:

"That's right, this is the day we've all been waiting for. It's time to go live with the new cluster. This Tuesday, in a 24 hour extended downtime, old Tranquility hardware is replaced with 70 new IBM 64-bit AMD dual processor blade servers. This operation should double, if not triple the performance on our proxy and application layers."

In addition to this upgrade EVE will now support client's 64 BIT DUAL CORE PROCESSORS ... how cool !!! Finally a game that takes advantage of cutting edge technology.

I have never seen such a huge investment in a game before .... not only that.. but in that link i posted... the creative director said that expansions will always be free.  CCP is the best company evah!

Ok, I should have written this two weeks ago, but I found time only now.

So, I've played the 14 day free trial. I have to tell you that the game is terribly additcive, at least for me. The true fun starts when you enter a corporation, and the need for money won't be that pressing. The cooperation, strategies, tactics make the game extremely appaling.

The graphics are good. Actually very good. Only a few minor bugs when warping and coming out of warp.

Lag almost non existant. Only the chat channels are quite hard to refresh, but that is not such a problem.

If you have any problems, you can adress a petition, and that can save you a lot of head-aches while being stuck, or something like that. Most of the problems are dealt real-time. DO NOT ABUSE IT!!!

I made some money, and even with the help from Gunwounds I can proudly say I bought and fitted all my ships from my own funds. The guys in the corporation were great, and helped me even I was a noob with no standing when my ship got blown up.

Solidarity and respect brothers ;)

So, if you have the chance, try it. I know for one that wehn I'll get some money I'll subscribe.

i assume from reading your post that the word you mean should be "appealing" and not appaling right?    ;D

Oh, right, sorry  ;)

Gunwounds, what can you tell me about Wiinter, and why did the Four Horsemen move from (Wiinter's quote) "the richest region" into the "poorest region". She told me she lost lots of credits since the corp was camped there and that's why she left.

Posted

We moved from Syndicate  to Geminate.

Syndicate had NPC stations that were in systems with lots of Crokite (high end ore).  Crokite mining is very lucrative. SO being able to mine crokite and then have haulers constantly  hauling and docking with your minerals is very convenient.

We moved to Geminate and there are no NPC stations.  However this allows us to build our OWN stations.  And it allows us to claim sovereignty.  This is part of the end game and it cannot be achieved in Syndicate as you cannot claim sovereignty in an area with NPC stations.

We made one station and we are working on a second one, and both are in systems with Crokite.  So we are back in business.  As far as being "camped" that only happens to people who dont treat lawless space with respect and dont travel with friends.  Wiinter most likely got killed many times roaming around in lawless space without using insta-jumps, insta-docks, and without any scouts or escorts.

Pirates frequently come by the area to harass nooblets that dont know what they are doing and quite often the nooblets get quite frustrated.  None of the main veterans have lost anything... i personally havent lost a ship in almost a year, and have been making tons of cash.

The casual gamers are the ones who get eaten up the most cause they dont take the game serious and dont take the proper precautions.  They forget this isnt WoW and then find themselves on the business end of a blaster and then cry about it.  Its good tho... the harshness of lawless space weeds out those who are the faint of heart.

However we are making the area safer and more like Syndicate everyday and there are tons more benefits to having sovereignty which i dont feel like explaining.... newer characters like you however have plenty to learn about in empire and have plenty to do that by the time you ever get to where you have something to do in lawless space,   it will be tamed by our elite forces locking down the area with better and better efficiency.

Can the Security in an alliance-controlled area be increased?

yes more and more patrols everyday are seen.... more extensive communication channels are being established..... lots of scouts around and rules are being enforced.  Someone was caught spawn stealing in an asteroid belt and the security forces confirmed it and gave a warning.... the person did not leave so the command to kill was issued and they lost a battlecruiser.

Any pirates coming into the systtem would get an immediate response.  OF course security can never be perfect (as real-life police cannot always save you) but if we can get security to a reasonable level then we will be happy.

Cool, so the Secutiry factor has been increased from 0.0?

Also did this las patch bring the turrets? I mean the ability for a corporation/alliance to place turrets at a gate or a station. Or to "hire" NPC police/customs agents. That would spare you a lot of problems.

oh no you cannot increase the "security rating" of a system.... that will always be set by the game... i meant you could increase the "manual security" ... meaning you can make an area safer by patroling it and establishing a community there.  The security rating as defined by the game has to stay 0.0 ... if it ever increased to 0.1 - 1.0  it would become "empire space" and we would not be able to claim sovereignty.  You cannot hire NPCs to police for you as it would be impossible to have the AI know who was good and who wasnt due to the intricate alliances and non-agression treaties.  Also i would not want NPC police as that would prevent complex politics.  We allow neutrals to enter our space even if they are not in our alliance becuz we consider them customers.  And we have certain treaties with other people.... it would be a nightmare to program that into some NPC police and then who would be responsible for updating it?  But you can deploy sentry drones which act like sentry guns anywhere you want which is cool.  That is a new feature.  They will attack anything you attack or anything that attacks you.

The new bloodlines are up. Cool. Asian.

I made a new free trial account and I am roaming around Gallente space.

The hardware upgrade might have been a little too much. Right now they're closing stargates like crazy. There can't be TOO MANY PLAYERS in one region. Not with the new CPUs... Even Jira, with the old config was accesible... hard, but accesible.

not not yet... it might be best for you to restart your character with the new bloodline... i know it sound wierd... but the new ones actually have better stat templates.  The Caldari Achura has teh best Intelligence/Perception ratio ... which are the two most important attributes in the game.  It wouldnt be worth it for an old player like me to restart of course... because i have like 30 million skill points.. but for a new player like you.... it would be very sweet.

I just started my trial.

I don't know what to say, but so far I'm kind of impressed.

The game isn't as "arcade" as I had hoped for, but it's still very fun.

What are you doing in that corporation of yours, Guns?

It would take many post to answer your question!.. best thing would be to re-read the early posts of this thread... that will give you a good idea.  Right now we are creating an organized civilization out in lawless space outside of the safe empire.  Its like the wild west and my corp is the sheriff's office.  When hostiles enter our sector we put the whole solar system on lockdown and all miners/civilians must stop mining or whatever they are doing and dock immediately at the nearest space station while we fight the pirates/rogues/mercs/ whatever they are.  And we are currently trying to construct a second major outpost.. which is a special space station that is the size of a mini-moon, which we can lease docking rights to.  And  none of this of which i speak is NPC... its all real people.
