Tolkien's style is redundantly descriptive, with it not even being particularly potent. An example of an author whose heavily descriptive style works in his favour would be Mervyn Peake, the author of the Gormenghast tilogy.

I did not say it was all bad ( although one could make that of my post) I only said it was sometimes disturbing or very frustrating,

like in LotR in the and the crossing to mount Doom by frode and same, it takes a lot of time while as a reader i often thought "well get on with it this takes to many pages for every kilometer.

In the books of Dune they do add to the story but not always, like Nema said they make you more aware of things...

So I'm about halfway through The White Plague, Mahdi, and I'm still enjoying it.  I really like the sociological aspects.  So remind me never to take your advice ever again.

But then, if you reminded me of that, I wouldn't heed the advice, and continue to heed your advice... curiouser and curiouser...
