ok, so i havent played E:BFD in a long long time as many know.  I decided to try and play again, but when i opened up Xwis and pressed set so it would get on the server and tried to login it never worked.  So, i went to the getting online help thread and re-downloaded xwis from the link in that thread.  But, when i opened it up it has the top ip adress set to 255.255.255.255 and the bottom 82.129.40.116.  When i press set it obviously changes everything to 255.255... and of course it doesnt work :( .  so i pressed open to get the host file up and i manually changed it to 82.129... (the xwis server ip on the getting online thread) and then saved and pressed set... it still wont login, it either times out or it just keeps acting like its loging in forever.  and if i re-open xwis it is still set on the 255.255 etc ...

Please help!

no, that wasnt working either... i understand that there have been problems lately with getting games to run... do you think that may be affecting me loging in as well?

Omg, I am getting bad at this. You are right Jeffy boy. I need new goggles.  8)

Slaphappy, look at your HOSTS file. Right click on the file and see if it is Read-Only. Make sure it isnt.

If that does affect it for the better, rename it to something slightly different (HOSTS.orig..?) then run the XWIS tool again. This will recreate the HOSTS file for you.

Let us know if that works.

it was not read-only so that step didnt really do anything...

I renamed the hosts file and then opened xwis and it had the 255.255.255.255 ip on the top line still and the bottom was blank... when i opened the hosts file it opened the notepad, asked me if i wanted to make a new file and i said yes.  it was blank so i put in 82.129.40.116 servserv.westwood.com into the document.

i saved it and exited xwis and then reopened it and the top line still had the 255.255... and the bottom said 82.129.40.116 , but obviously if i pressed set it would just set it to 255.255... so i manually changed the top line to be the good xwis ip adress and pressed set again.  When i ran emperor it still timed out when i tried to login. :(  and now again everytime i open xwis it has the 255.255.255.255 ip adress at the top...

i inserted 2 pics... one of the xwis box w/ the 2 ip adresses and one of the hosts file, tell me if something is plainly wrong with either of them please.[attachment archived by Gobalopper]

You should really get some help from gryphon or Nyarlathotep about this cause erjin is emperor's village idiot.

ey jeff... actually erjin spend a lot of time helping me with my problems last week... though the solution somehow came by itself then...  ;D

@ slaphapy5: did you check your internet connections? this 255. ip sounds like some kind of network setting to me as it's changed back to 255. everytime (like it would be some default connection ip). check your network-card, grant full access for the game at your firewall and so on and try again.

and try typing the xwis ip manually into the tool as you did, set it and try the "test" button and take a look at the message then...

The bit I have made bold (above) sounds a bit odd to me. You say you renamed the hosts file, then opened the hosts file in notepad. Did you open the hosts file you renamed ? Why did it ask you if you wanted to make a new file ? It shouldnt have done that.

Try this, rename any hosts file you have there to something else. Download the attachment below, and rename it to hosts (take of the ".txt") and place it in the correct folder. Then DO NOT run the tool. Just try the game.[attachment archived by Gobalopper]

i put in that folder and didnt run it and tried the game but it didnt work, it said something like connection failed.

if i type it in manually and go to test, it says "unable to connect: ECONNREFUSED"  I have no clue how to use my network card and things like that, i dont have a network hooked up.  When i was looking at my LAN in my network card settings or w/e they are, i noticed something called subnet mask that is very similar to the 255. ip adress... wtf is a subnet mask.

ok. I think you have a more basic problem. Delete the file I gave you to download, the hosts one.

Go to start menu. Go to "Run..." and type "command".

Type in "ping 82.129.40.116" and tell me if it reports a sucessful ping or fails.

Also, do you have any firewalls installed ?

it looks like it was a successful ping to me.  I do have norton and its firewall installed, but when i first tried to hook up to the internet it of course popped up and im pretty sure i said allow this connection and always remember this setting.  How can i check to see if it is in fact set that way? i tried looking through the norton program but i couldnt find anything.

Try just temporarily disabling it, its quicker for diagnostics, and if it does cause the problem, then we can always find out how to allow it if it isnt allowed (emp though firewall, that is).

Pinging 82.129.40.116 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 82.129.40.116: bytes=32 time=1546ms TTL=56

(3 more times repeated)

Ping statistics for 82.129.40.116:

    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

    Minimum = 1546ms, Maximum = 1913ms, Average = 1761ms

This is what my ping looks like, does yours look like that (approximately) and dont worry about my long ping times, I was in the middle of a MAJOR download !  ;)

yes, thats what my ping looks like.

SUCCESS! when i disabled norton it worked... i dunno if it was on the xwis server but it got on some kinda server, there was even a game going.  so how do i find out how to let it allow emp?

ya... well celebration just ended... i tried playing a single player game but now emp keeps closing like 30 seconds into my game!!!!! three times in a row... i just played it yesterday without any problems... and i know norton shouldnt be affecting a single player game... wtf!

it minimizes and says something along the lines of this program needs to end immediately, and it has that error report screen.

edit: i've attached a pic of the screen.. it's just one of those error reports[attachment archived by Gobalopper]

Yea I tried the hark campaign a week or so ago and after a bit it totally shut down emp and gave me an error messeage.  Then the next time I tried it was fine.

Can't wait to kick ur rusty ass online.

my problem is different.  I can start up the game fine, but when i go to single player, single skirmish and set up everything and whatnot.  I press play and the game loads normal, if its the first time ive played since i restarted my comp, then i'm able to get to the point of scouting the map, then the game cuts with that error message and black around it.  If its the second or later time i've tried playing since i restarted my comp then i only get to the point of zooming on on my MCV.  But i do actually get to the game, it doesnt crash before the main menu like those other problems.  I even tried switching cd's but its the same thing.  I have no idea why this happened so suddenly.  I havent' installed anything that i am aware of since yesterday when it was working perfectly fine...  :'(  the most i did today was disabling and re-enabling norton firewall. i dont get it! to quote donkey: "i think i need a hug"

ok... i used to have emp compatability set to win 98/me which i think always worked, but i changed it to win 95 and now its running flawlessly... go figure. and i went through my Norton firewall and played around w/ the blocked programs and xwis and emp were set to block all.... so i fixed that... hwoever now every time i open a new window in internet explorer it tells me twice that it is trying to access the internet and i have to say permit all twice... hopefully that will go away eventually.
