I am thinking about building my own computer.  I don't have the money to go all out and buy the best-of the best parts.  But I was going to go all out on the motherbord so that I can upgrade the computer once I get more money.  I was thinking about buying a mother board that supors dual xeon processors, but I only want to get one xeon processor right now and once I get enough money I would got a second.  Do dual xeon motherboards work with only one xeon processor?

What would be the best motherboard to buy?

(I want it's form factor to be ATX)

How much would it cost?

I am just starting High school and I want to be a computer programer or do some vedio editing.  So I would use the computer for programing, vedio editing, wesites and, of course gaming.

Should I go with a single pentium 4prosser?

yes, dual boards can support just one Xeon.. you can stick in the second one at a later date...

as Doc mentioned. . what's the use of your computer. .for advacned video editing I would also recommend a dual. And games might preform better on a singel CPU. I hav seen Command and Conquer Zero hour crash on just about every P4 and AMD system ones you get to 40+ superweapons... the onlycompt which didn't crash was a dual. Could have been coinsidence. .. ..

You wouln't get me to use a singel CPU system [ laptops excepted ]. . not even for Office... but that's a personall preferance. If you don't have any special plans for the dual CPU system. . . .don't do it.

I doubt there is a best CPU. . it depends on what you are gon'na do with it.

AMD-XP, G5, P4, Celeron, Xeon, AMD-64 .. they are all good CPU's. . let's face it. . they work don't they. . ;)

It usually is a matter of personall preferance, budget and sometimes even what most of your friends have...

Doc will probably recommend you a P4 with an Asus motherboard. .. which I must admit is a perfectly good combination. I would go for the Xeon / Intel combination. And I have a friend who chooses AMD over intell any day. My girlfriend however want's a G5.. .just my luck. . a GF who has a tast for computers. . . :P

Doc will use his PC as a high end gaming machine, I use it just to be stable for any OS and server application. . don't care if that give me a little big lag in my game from time to time. . or not always the highest possible resolution to play in. . . my GF is a grafical designer. . so she prefers Mac's [ how ironical .. ]

not a clear answer you have been waiting for.. .. so what do you wan'na use your computer for ?

I am not totaly shure about what I would use it for.  It needs to last for around 4 or 5 yeats (threw high school and maby colage).  I will probably at first just use it to surf the web, play games, writing essays, and program websites.  Later on, I might use it for vedio editing and more advanced programing.  It all depends...  so I want something that is verry flexable, and verry expandable.  something that will last.  Any Ideas?

Oh, and it has to be under $1000.  Prefably under $900.  I might get money for my birth day to buy the patrts, but it won't be more then $1000, I doubt it will even be more then $800.  Once I get a job I can start to upgrade it and make it more powerful.

There isn't realy a CPU type that lasts for more then 3 years .. so a computer that needs to last 4 - 5 years will almost certianly be realy old by the time it's in it's 4th year. ..

It's a shame you gon'na do the light stuff [ vidio editing, advanced programming ] not right away. . .video editing will be more complex next year, running better on newer CPU's.

Think I'd look for a P4 or AMDXP...

I didn't here it anywhere. . just if you open up a lot of servers you notice the fact that the CPU is missing and the server is functioning normally. .. ;)
