Hey,

I have recently been experiencing 3D games locking up on me after about 20 minutes of play, I have installed a temperature monitor and my CPU runs at about 52 deg/C Idle. Is this a little on he high side?  Could the freezing of games be caused by the processor overheating and cutting out? Or is this an unlikely theory to my problem?

If anyones interested in a dxdiag, find it attached.

Thanks.[attachment archived by Gobalopper]

High temprature could be a reason for your pc to lockup/reboot.

Especially if it happens in more games, what you could do is take your computer case off and have an external fan blow cool air inside.

I also looked at your dxdiag and I've noticed you have a VIA chipset, in combination with a creative sound card. Especially in your case where you haven't updated yyour mobo chipset drivers (VIA), you may encounter some problems there.

Another thing you may want to try is the 56.72 driver from Nvidia. It has proven to be the most stable driver for the somewhat older cards (non-FX).

I tried blowing air from an external fan into my case a few days back and that seemed to solve the problem, that is what led me to think it was a heat issue.

If you check the dxdiag, you will notice I have an AMD Athlon XP 1800+  ;)

I will try all the ideas mentioned when I get some time as i have a lot on right now,

Thanks,

Good point about the DXDiag ! Maybe I should look first ! Then again, I did rush through because of time.

Right, so you know it is a heat issue. Then it should be quite easy to work out. If you switch on your computer, and just surf the 'net, does it crash within the normal time it takes to crash ?

If not, it will be the graphics card, if yes, more then likely it will be the CPU. Also, when it crashes/freezes, what is the temp ? You say idle is 52, but try to find out what it was around the time of the crash. As soon as it crashes/freezes, restart (reset button  :D) and go straight to bios and find the hardware monitor, check in there, it shouldnt have droppped too much by then (5-10 seconds).

That should just confirm whether it is graphics card or cpu, although you will probably have a good idea by then anyway.

Good luck.

Put an ice cube on it Ice_Cube. ;D

How did I know that was coming  :D

I will try these things out in a weeks time (going on a school trip)...

Update:

Due to the fact I had forgotten one of my admin passwords, I thought I would give my CPU a work out by trying to break the md5 hash, lol.

Anyways, so after about 12 hours straight of full usage, no lock ups were experienced....

So whilst surfing the ol' web, I came across this:

I guess the coming together of my board and my graphics card was just no meant to be  :'(

Never mind, maybe I can get some cash together some time  ;D

Well, I did offer to make that sacrifice for you. So in recognition of that I think you should give me a nice new grfx card...maybe ?  :'(

Desperately,
