Apollyon Posted July 30, 2004 Posted July 30, 2004 Well, in the house I have 3 computers, 2 on Windows XP and my personal one on windows 2k.All are networked together and recognise eachother through the network without IP clashes and so forth. Files can be moved and browsed across the newtwork as normal. This, my main computer with win2k is also the one connected to the internet by means of ADSL modem. Previously the other two computers on the network have gained access through my computer. For some reason, neither computer seems to be able to access my connection currently. I set "Never dial connection" on both and neither can find any webpages etc. Any ideas as to the problem? ???
Dunenewt Posted July 30, 2004 Posted July 30, 2004 Have you got a firewall? What are the proxy settings?
gryphon Posted July 30, 2004 Posted July 30, 2004 you will need to give a little bit more info about how you previously have shared your internet connection. .Did you have 2 ethernet adapters in your Win2k computer, or was it a USB ADSL modem ?And how did you share that connection, Microsoft software or another 3th party one ?
erjin999 Posted July 31, 2004 Posted July 31, 2004 Apo ! I have a similar setup to yours (except 3 XPs) and used ICS to share internet. Then I got a router. It made a HUGE difference. As for sorting out your current setup, have you tried uninstalling/unapplying ICS and reapplying/reinstalling it ? Windows is wonderful like that :P
Cyborg Posted July 31, 2004 Posted July 31, 2004 The easiest way to let several PCs use the same source of Internet is by getting/buying a switch/hub(very, very cheap), an ethernet cable for each of the computers, plug each cable into a computer and the switch/hub, and then finally the Internet cable into the modem/router and the uplink port of your switch/hub(for non-crossed Internet signals, plug into a normal port).
erjin999 Posted July 31, 2004 Posted July 31, 2004 Those kinds of modems (the ones with ethernet out) are not too common with ADSL providers here in UK, so I guess he has a cheaper kind of USB modem...but until Mr Apo replies, I cant be shure >:(
Cyborg Posted August 1, 2004 Posted August 1, 2004 At least in Norway broadband modems connect to your network card.
erjin999 Posted August 1, 2004 Posted August 1, 2004 To make internet cheaper in uk the ADSL providers tend to use cheaper USB modems, which are fine for one computer (actually, I dont like them because of the way they dialup every time you switch on the machine). We seem to be far behind every one else when it come to internet services !
Dunenewt Posted August 1, 2004 Posted August 1, 2004 At least in Norway broadband modems connect to your network card.Same here.
Apollyon Posted August 1, 2004 Author Posted August 1, 2004 It's USB, yeah. Really quite odd. Yes I have a firewall on all comps, but I can transfer files between and play LAN games.
erjin999 Posted August 3, 2004 Posted August 3, 2004 Seriously Apo, Windows can be funny like that, have you tried reinstalling ICS ?
gryphon Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 most well known question, what changed sinds last time it did work. . software installations, network change ..things like that ?And have you tried without the firewalls enabled or to look in your firewall logs ?
Apollyon Posted August 5, 2004 Author Posted August 5, 2004 Ok, problem solved. Thanks to everyone who helped. :)
