I've been making a Star Trek-based top-down shooter on and off for some time now, and I need your opinions on what a TWoK-era plasma torpedo would look like.  I'm not very creative today I guess, as everything I make looks like crap.  Here's what a TOS-era plasma torpedo looks like, but that's far too bland compared with what I could do today.

I was thinking it should look something like an Illumastorm plasma ball, or something like this.  Any thoughts?

Oh, and for those interested, here is a little gameplay screenshot of what I have so far.[attachment archived by Gobalopper]

Well i dunno. But as far as i know, the Romulan plasma torpedoes from TNG are green. It's not electric so even though it looks cool, it doesn't have much to do with that. It's plasma. So it's shape changes a bit during flight.. it's not solid, but it is one big bubble of green plasma.

are you sure? I don't think that the federation has plasma torpedoes.

They have photon and quantum.. but not plasma i think.

In that game, they are 'new and experimental weapons'. There is a 2% chance that they detonate upon launching and take a torpedo bay with them. On the bright side, they fire straight through enemy shields, making them some of the more powerful weapons in your arsenal.

The Federation have pulse plasma torpedoes. Ever see that episode with the USS Phoenix which could phase in and out of matter? Its the same concept. A conventional warhead is fitted with a plasma charge and this phase technology. Basically, the torpedo travels through the shields and hull of the enemy ship and detonates in the center of its hull. Its appearance is a standard red torpedo, but with the red ball at the center noticably absent, and the spars of light shining from this no-ball dimmed and see-through. Not really that cool. Not even that good either. They only gave you 20 of them in the game, and not even 4 could destroy one of the final four boss ships. Harumph.

You mean the one with Riker's crazy old CO, now an Admiral (his name was Jellico or something like that, I believe)?  That was the U.S.S. Pegasus.

Yeah, but Jellico was someone else. He was the captain who took over the Enterprise when Picard was captured by Cardassians.

Yeah, man, I know my shit. ;D

The lightning ball looks cool, but how are you going to put that much detail in? The torpedoes look pretty small in that screenshot.

exactly my thought.

Well that's one of my main problems, yes.  I tried uding one effect, involving a similar starburst effect as I used with the photon torpedo seen in the screenshot, but with fewer rays.  I then added a "hoop" of energy around the outside, but it didn't turn out very well.

It'll be a bit bigger than a regular torpedo.  Since it will home in on the target (i.e. you), you will be able to shoot it down, so it can't be a really tiny speck, or no one will be able to hit it.
