thank you for your quick reply. no, no router. i just moved and haven't set anyhting up. in fact, for the moment, i'm using a modem. i just keep getting the "our services are curently down for maintenence try later..click to retry" message. i've tried without firewall and virus protection. the "6" patch seemed to get me further. the game from the disk did require a download..presumably of the "6" patch but that gave the message from the Dune graphics of "file not found". this IS an original CD not a copy and i didn't acquire this from Kazaa or anything. i've turned the graphics to 8 bit..pretty much all the advice from others on this board. stil the westwood servers are not available.. oh please help. i'd hate to wait weeks or forever for a username. maybe someone could give me and old one not used anymore? are you able to play the game this evening?

here's an exact cut and paste of the message i get. i fear it's dead. surely the rather serious Dune 2K fans out there are capable of starting a new site with a patch or so...it would be a bit difficult but not so bad ..i hope. it's probably dead and i missed the death by just a few months. damn. anyway, here's the quote.

  those few minutes may be forever...buy out EA doggone!

If the servers down there is nothing you can do until the guys at EA waken up and earn there salaries.  However, the steps for getting on line are fairly simple.

1) You must get an active Westwood Account, use the following link to set it up:

2)Install dune 2000 with all the internet options.

3)Before you start Dune make sure you do not have any firewall or antivirus programs running (nortons is the big issue here), this will also include the XP firewall.

4)Set up for 8 bit graphics and select multiplayer and the internet tab.

5)login using your Westwood account name and password.

6)The first of two automatic updates will happen.

7)I think after the first update the game needs to be restarted as before, where the second update (1.06 patch) is installed.

8)To maintain stability with the server connection there are two trains of thought.

8.1)RotorZ Connector

Go to Shygirls site (link provide) and go to the clan DLA (Dune Liberation Army) from within this site. Two downloads are available RZ 0.86 then the upgrade 0.91. Install 0.86 then the update to 0.91. There is a further update 0.93b which I have not got yet, maybe some can suggest a site?

You must run rotorZ (double click exe icon)before starting Dune

8.2 Updated wolani.dll file

Again within shygirls site there is a modified file which is simply copied over the top of the existing file in the internet sub-folder from Dune 2000.

You can't install RZ and update the wolani.dll file, its either one or the other.  Updating the (dll) file appears to be the preferred way to go, but its a preference thing I think?

9) With the two automatic updates installed (the Dune front end screen shows v1.06 at the bottom right I think) and either RZ running or the wolani.dll file updated your now good to go.

Hi Birdie

The westwood servers are up and running with no problems as scotty said, they where down for about 8 hours two weeks ago, (for upgrades) if you are using a modem 56k I would recomend you use the DLL.file its on my website, and as scotty said just copy and paste it to your dune/internet folder, if you have cable I would recomend rc93.b, if you cant get a log in name and password let me know what name you want and ill get it for you  :) when you get online Birdie look me up, and ill introduce you to your very first online Butt whooping.  :)

p.s Also Birdie if you have trainers or cheats installed they must be removed before you play on line, if you have those installed the game will crash.

p.p.s. Andrew westwood never ever e-mail you your nic and password, just use the one you made at sign up.  :) believe me they dont send them to you.  ::)

I made you this nic I hope its ok, DuneXbird  you can change the caps on this nic to suit you. ie  dunexbird  or DuneXbirD  or whatever, ill instant message the password to you, the passwords for westwood are case sensetive and for this one you must use lower case. hope to see for for battle very soon, dune has players online from accross the world most are from England, but there are lots from usa canada and europe, a few from new zealand, (including Scotty)and we occasionaly have one from malasia, and some from south america,

i made it in just now..there are three other players in there but no-one is responding to me. still though i can play apparantly :-) is there a way to see if the players are already in a game? also if i set up a game do i have to page others or do open games show up that others can join?

Wow! an intelligent newbie, the first i have ever seen. Most noobs are like "o yeah i've been playing dune since it came out i'm gonna waste you", then when u crush them they accuse u of cheating LOL!

      Ghana Onslaught, nice to see another newbie:-) right now the westwood servers are apparantly going through trouble from the ea games company buyout. i just got my username from someone kind from this board. it seems you have to have an old account to get a new username. just to note: the  Command and Conquer games on the ea site are currently the same so maybe in the next month or so people can register new accounts(hopefuly). i would think someone would give you an old little used user account from this site. i'm new too and don't know how valuable these may be... still though i've only visited this site for a few days and people here are nice. i'm sure someone will pm to you an account to use.
