From what I have read, the original descendant with Elrond and another were actually half elves, but the Valar forced them to choose to be either elven or human. The descendant of Gondor chose humanity, as well as the descendant of Numenor, but Elrond chose to be pure elven.

Why did the pantheon of Gods (Valar) force them to choose pure lineages? why couldnt they continue to be half elves?

The choice wasn't so much a choice between being "elven" being "human," or being "Half Elven." It was a choice between mortality and immortality; they had to choose one.

Elros and his brother Elrond were both half elven, sons of Earendil and Elwing. Earendil of course was a human, where as Elwing was a female elf.

Earendil was one of the most "Good" natured humans. Most men were evil and followed Morgoth. Earendil faught on the side of the other Eldar and the Maiar. After words, he wished good men to have a peacful place to live, separate from the wars of Middle Earth. The Eldar of course couldn't grant him and his kind immortality, since they were human, but his sons were a different matter. They were half elven, so it was decided that they would have a choice between being mortal or immortal. Elrond chose to live with the elves, and so chose immortality. Elros chose to retain Iluvatar's gift of death, and become the first King of men, king of Numenor, and King/First of the Dunedain.

The fact that both are *still* half elven, and not of a "pure lineaege" is reflected in the fact that The Dunedain *are* "superior" humans to those of middle earth. The most readily available observation of this is that they live longer. Elros lived the longest, for example, at about 500 years, something no "true" human could do. Therefore, he isn't *really* human, but instead a mortal half elf.

It brought diversity. Immortal elves carried memory, values, while short-living humans tried to be as much active as possible, so they carried initiative for innovation. Creation isn't ment to create a perfect specie. Dwarves, orcs, balrogs and all other stuff were also created by Valar. Ones for special purpose (like Melkor's ones), others just for joy of creation. World is a beautiful symphony of Iluvatar, you know...

what I am wondering though is did legolas eventually leave to the undyingl ands, and was gimli allowed to go withhim?

Also where do you ever read te physical characteristics of elves?

Yes, after King Elessar's (Aragorn) death, Legolas built a ship in Ithillien and sailed down the Anduin into the sea, w/ Gimli the "elf-friend" dwarf. Apparently, it was Galadriel who gave favor to Gimli to go w/ Legolas into the Undying Lands...

Anyone here a member of the "Council of Elrond"? (The forums, not the original council...)

I went and checked out Council of Elrond because you asked... it's really cool. I am a member now! I'm username "Ghanima" (Tinuviel was of course taken... oh well.)

Thanks for mentioning it! ;D
