When I tell my computer to turn off(where the 3 options of what you want to do comes up) about 1-2 seconds later when it is fading to black and white

It seems to take the top part of the screen and repeat it.

All I done since I noticed it was install and uninstall DVD software, and also install codecs.

Also usually after I am done doing a thourough scandisk, my mouse never works and sometimes my keyboard doesnt eithor. This is solved by me restarting my computer. It only happens when I do a thourough scandisk.[attachment archived by Gobalopper]

Nope. But I may. (actually only need to uninstall 1 of the programs as I've always had the other one)

This is not a dentrimental problem but it looks bad when I shut it down.

When did you defrag your comp last ?

It sounds like your pc is having trouble finding files.

Re-your mouse and keyboard, I think your drivers are corrupted, probably your registry too.

Try doing a restore point restore to a day before you installed the DVD software and or the codecs.

It seems most likely that the codecs(if video codecs ? )

have caused the problem.Have you installed any video editing software recently or at the same time as your codecs ?

I defrag regularly.

Do what to my mouse and keyboard??

How are my drivers corrupted?

Not any video editing software.

It probably is, only harmless, but there should be a good reason(adn cure) as to why it does that evertime i go to the shutdown menu, and if I press cancel it goes back to normal.

Time for a formatting! ;) (which to properly prepare can take several days, and then after the format is complete, several more to get back to the way I like it.)

Windows XP loves to corrupt files, especially after crashes or freeze ups, or even after auto update of windows has downloaded and installed so called hot fixes.

If you re-install your keyboard and or mouse drivers it should solve the mouse problem you have.

Well it did on mine ! ask Doc. ;)

I have the same thing when I shutdown with XP. I have it since the beginning and it hasn't annoyed me. I have no clue as how to solve it, like said have it ever since I installed XP..

:| still there must be something wrong, wrong drivers perhaps? win98 drivers?

I don't have tweak XP or anything. It may have also started after installing microsoft updates onto my computer. I must have gotten like 100 updates since April 8 (my last format/installation of windows)

And when I format again, I doubt I will get the service pack 1 as it only slows down the computer. (maybe not even any windows updates as they are a pain)

I installed this twice already and it still says I dont have it >:( EDIT - I just installed it twice more and it is still there.(And I restarted computer)

Alert: HP Pavilion and Windows XP Service Pack 1 Incompatibility

Download size: 112 KB, < 1 minute

Alert: Windows Update has detected that your computer is a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion desktop or Compaq Presario desktop PC with Windows XP pre-installed. After you install Windows XP Service Pack 1, you might encounter an issue with the PC System Recovery utility. If you use this utility to perform a non-destructive system recovery, you might be unable to start your computer. Hewlett-Packard has released an update to the PC System Recovery utility to remedy this issue, which you can install from the Hewlett-Packard Web site. Once you install the update, this alert will no longer appear when you visit the Windows Update Web site. Alternatively, recovering from this error can be accomplished by running full destructive system recovery, which results in the loss of all user data. Please refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) Article Q329450 for additional information. Read more...

And just now it says I also have a driver update for my

Intel network software update released on September 17 2003.

I just checked for updates a couple of days ago, and now they say there is an update that was released last month??

Why do you guys think it's weird actually ?

With almost every Windows version the background is different when shutting down. Take for example Windows 2000, the background get's a black "curtian" over it..

Umm, because before when I press the shutdown option in the start menu, the backround would stay the same, only getting black and white(which is normal) and now it starts to do that and then immediatly goes to a repetetive top 20 pixels of the page.(which is not normal.) I am talking about not when it is actually shutting down, I am talking about when I want to shut/restart/hibernate it does this.

Yes the backround when shutting down is different in all OS's, But none are supposed to have a repetitive "banner" when looking at the options as to whether you want to shut down/restart/hibernate.

It's not the norm, so it could be a fault starting to develop into a more serious one. ;)

You can upto some point change the settings for login on and of in Windows. Tweaking it to look more like what you want.

I have a few fresh installs of WinXP with the latest drivers and patches updated to euh .. . yesterday and 6 hours ago. With powertoys TweakUI installed. . . never had that problem myself. . .sofar .. .
