Well, I know a lot of you probably don't bother but I know at least some do, so what formations do you put your units in?

Early game with Ordos I tend to get 3 lines of dustscouts, each consisting of 5 dusties and attack the enemy from several sides at once, running 1 line away while the other 1 attacks and so on. With atreides vs harkonnen/ordos I tend to position 4 minos in a line with fedakin grouped to the sides and 2 geese just behind and 2 repair vehicles as support.

Formations? I split them up in groups, distraction, anti tank, anti infantry and/or i split them up into tasks, this group will distract them, this group will take upon all the fire etc etc. Everything depends on the situation.

That's not formations, Ken, that's groups. A formation is the physical form a group of units takes, whether it be an arrow, crescent or whatever.

Well, I've seen Dawg use them to pretty good effect. I agree that it would have been good had formation options been included in emp. It would be great if you could design your own formations and then implement them with the click of a button.

Yes, Newt, we know that. Have you tried to keep a constant formation navigating from one side of the map to the other using the j key though? It really doesn't work well.
