I have 2 problems which annoy me very much:

1. Windows XP shrinks all my menu's, you remember those arrows? I have a screenshot of it. And I hate it to click away those arrow everytime, and wait for the entire menu to show up. I don't want a shorter menu because I rarely use some items. I just want the entire meny at once. How can I put that shrinking menus off?

See the attachment.

2. Although I have all my hard drives on every computer made shareable to anyone on the network, there are still some folders which I can't enter. Like the windows folder, and the "Document and Settings" folder etc.

How do I share everything to every computer? My network is at home, and I don't have a criminal family, so Microsoft shouldn't limit access!

Thanks for any help :)[attachment archived by Gobalopper]

Don't know how to put of that menu thingy, although all the program groups that you use frequently should be visible.

On the second, I presume you login to all the different computers locally and don't have a member server that validates your account name ? You should have an account of each user on your network on each of the computers of that network. All with the same name and password on each computer. Then make shure the user that hasn't got acces has got sharing right from the root folder that is being shared to enter that map, and that the specific map has got the correct security rights [ NTFS filesystem rights ] to view that map.

[ Microsoft has limited acces to certain folders by default, so you might need to manually check if they are adjusted correctly when you want to share it to anyone. ]

Thanks Gobalopper, I think that will do the trick. I can't test it right now, because that arrow doesn't always come up. But it sounds reasonable.

I searched dozens of times through those options, but the translation I have is even more unclear on what it does then that it is unclear in English.

I don't know how I have to configure such a network. What you say sounds good. But I have more versions of Windows (XP and 98) can that go together?

And do I have to reinstall anything, or can this be done easily.

Thanks for the help

You don't have to reinstall any of the 2 Windows versions. With Win'98 it's easy. Just right-click on local network, select properties and in the first tab there is the option [ just below your default login type ] to share your resources. [ printer and / or files ]. Make shure the files part is vinked on. If this is you will have the addition of a delen or sharing when you right click on a folder on that Windows machine. In that sharing tab fill in the share name and allow [ read and write ] rights to it.

WinXp is even easier. :)

Right click on the folder you want to share, look at the security tab. The obkect everyone should be allowed to have read - write - list folder contents vinked on. Although you might want modify on aswell. Make shure all the sub-directories have the same NTFS right. They arn't allways passed down to all sub-dirs. You will have to check them manually if you are refused access into one.

I take it Win'98 users are at this point capable to vieuw the remote / shared folders on the WinXP computers, so that's why I didn't mention you should enable network sharing on it.

After you have checeked he NTFS rights of the folders make shure that everyone [ unless you just want the user who have logged in with a password to it to have access, but you mentioned the rest isn't criminal with you that won't be needed ;) ] has right to visit and alter things it that folder.

Note that the share rights are only needed in the first folder that you are sharing, subfolders will automatically be accessable. Parent foldres won't be. With NTFS rights they apply to each file and folder seperately. So one file in folder my map can be accessable to everyone while anothter file hsa got NTFS rights not allowing anyone access to it, that will be unaccessable fo users. So if you can't get acces to a file in the share those right are probably wrong.

windows will always use the most restrictive policy for an object.

Hope that helps. . :)

Hi Timen,

I can give you a useful tip with tweaking Windows 98 or XP, there is a program called X setup,if you search on google.com you should be able to find it, if not reply to me and I will try and find out where I downloaded it from.

It's good for changing the way menus behave e.t.c..

Hmm, the idea of Gobalopper doesn't seem to work. I still get that arrow to show all items in the menu.

gryphon, I don't get what you say there will be. I can already reach the tab sharing. But I don't get the options literally you say. I can, however, define rights to others. But not all the subfolders are included. Because I have my harddisk shared, and still I can't reach the windows folder, or the documents and settings folder with another computer. And when I try to define the sharing rights for the windows folder itself, then it says I can't do that because it is used by the operating system.

Atomic, I don't know much about tweaking software, but I've heard sometimes it can do damage. So I won't use it if there is there is an option in windows for it (Windows has alot of hidden options) But thanks anyway.

About the arrow in the menu's, it IS annoying and I have tried to find a solution myself as well. However, as I like to have everything ordend (Games under games, programs under programs, tools under tools, Programs that require internet under internet, Audio - video apps under audio - video.. you get the idea :)), I adjusted the menu's and the arrows have gone. The menu's aren't that long listed anymore, so no need for the arrow.. You might want to give it a try..

I guess that is on your WinXP computer on which you don't have access to the shared Windwos and documents and settings folders ?

When you try to enter that folder, do you get an persmission denied error or an share not avalable error ?

(1)

Also make shure that simple filesharing is turned off.

in explorer, tools > folder options> View>.

Then, create an account on the client computer with the same name as your admin account on the WinXP computer [ and same password ] and try to reach the C drive by going to computernameC$.

[ you can also map that drive as a network drive on the client PC ]

(2)

sharingfolder.gif

That tab has most of the configuration, with the share permissions in the permissions thingy.

Next to it is the security tab

permissions.gif

in which you will have to check the settings of eatch of the subfolder, the settings in the sharing tab will filter down automatically to subfolders, the security ones don't have to to that by default.

[ note that the second picture lacks the presents of a sharing tab in it, although the security one is the same on poth pictures, just not shown in the first. ]

If it should work [ 1st solution ], and you don't just want to use an admin account [ which you shouldn't ;) ] make shure the user that logs in from the client is also a user on the WinXP computer [ create the account there if needed ] and that the user has sufficient rights [ in both sharing and security ] to access the folder.

[edit: that certificate popup you get on this page is from the Microsoft site, the pictures are linked from there and as there servers are now located with Akamai and not Microsoft anymore you get one of those nasty popups. . sorry. . ]

AARGH! It sounds all familiar to me what you say. But for some reason I can't find an option 'simple filesharing' anywhere in map properties. But I recognise those options and screenshots from the network from my old school. The way you could limit acces to certain people, and the way you could give them read and write and delete etc. rights.

But I can find that option you told me off.

Has this something to do with that I have Win XP Home Edition?

And yes, I get a permission denied error.

Nyar, thanks I'll try that. Mostly I try to organize my start menu as much as possible. But I didn't try it your way. My way was to put everything I use much in a different start menu folder (so not in 'programs')

I'll try what you said

Just got home and are still catching up with a lot of things, sorry I don't know I by head at this time :-[ I'll reply with anything I find tomorrow about the differance between the home and pro version of XP.

Just to make shure at this time, changes should be made on the WinXP computer using an administrator account. And if you havn't already done it could you check the security options tab located in the properties section of the folder that is giving you the error.

Should be the screen below.

permissions.gif

The user account on your remote comuter should be in those security settings with read, and list right vinked on. Mayby more if you like to alter or wrtie in it ofcourse. When those are wrong you will get a permission denied error.

And I will look into the simple file sharing thing for the home edition later today. I presume it's the Dutch version os WinXP ?

Posted

I have the Dutch version of Windows XP (unfortunately)

I can't find that option "simple file sharing"

And I think that might be the only problem.

I am the ultimate administrator of my computer, I can do everything :) (should be)

Posted

ok, this isn't the answer you wanted.

It should be located here

image1.gif

although it's not an option for the WinXP home edition. One of the other features they apperently have left out with the home edition is the option to join a domain.

You might want to give it a shot to share those folders independantly. ..

Posted

Ok, that is clear to me. It doesn't work under Windows XP Home Edition, what I have.

I will have to find a way to get Professional edition.

But thanks for your time and clearing that up :)

Posted

No problem. Just sorry that we couldn't tell you that is is possible to turn that option on with the Home version.

And I heard that there is a version of Longhorn on the XS4all servers in The Netherlands, it's not WinXP pro but it might do .. .

Posted

Longhorn is the codename fot the new Windows version. Due for release in 2005 now or so. Microsoft keeps chaning the date. A Beta [ or pre-Beta ] is avelable from the XS4all newsgroup server in The Netherlands somewhere .. ..

Posted

Hmm, I rather stick to a reliabe version. Normally I would try beta's. But a Operating System is something else then just commong software.

But thanks anyway

Hi Timenn, I know this sounds strange maybe, but if you go into Control Panel, Folder options, view, click show hidden files and folders, it should fix the problem with other uses.

Please let me know if this helps.

The first thing I do when I make a new user somewhere is putting that option on. Because windows doesn't have to hide system files from me.

So that can't be it :-
