WOA.... I didn't read something as good as this since quite a while. I am astounded and will have to mature this for a while (really). I propose anyone interested in post-war Japan (and its US tutorship) or the political use of religion should read this imperatively:

And keep in mind the Missionaria Protectiva!!! Herbert is enlightning....

Organized form of shintoism, which arised after fall of samurais and was primary state's religion until september 1945, was making the emperor one of the highest gods. With fanatical busidistic nationalists, serving the him, it was only a matter of time when they will start expansion. It was nearly similar ideology to nazism, considering Japanese as only rule-worthy race.

I think it helped the japanese people bigtime. You will notice that especially when the british siezed territory (which was wrong), they said they tryed to convert the native population, but at times it dindt work too well. The french suprisingly though did a lot more missionary work with the aid of the state, and they actually did things completely differently, integrating the people and treating them farely. I think it originally was a great thing to bring christianity to the japanese, even the article says so. It helped many, even if not many were converted.

I CANT BELIEVE IT!!

You guys only take the last part of the article saying that it finally got good impact, without looking at the article's main point: THE GOVERNMENT HAD BAD POLITICAL INTENTIONS INTO ALL THIS.

And it's just what's happening in Iraq.

PS: You too are arguing that "Japanese were better if we forced them to believe, and we got truth so had to decide for them"? Don't you see the government's political motives?

That the Amercians defeated Japan in open war is ok, and the following ocuptaion is honorable, but the attempt to steal Japan's souls is not honorable, if you defeat an ennemy, you just don't try to force your culture down their throats

This article brought by Egeides, made me remember something that I am 100% sure.

A bit off topic but I don't think is necessary to make a new topic.

It's about the US intervention in South America in the 70's and 80's related to sending to missionaries to sterilize woman.

I'll put it in form of a story because that's the way I remember it, in my conversation with Charles.

Charles and two of his friends, a recent graduates of the school of medicine were contacted by a US priest to work in a recently formed NGO (non government organization) to start working in remote towns of Peru and Bolivia, they were chosen among other reasons because they speak Spanish, English and most important "aymara" a native language of those towns they were going to work in.

Most people on those towns were completely unattended by their governments, and when I say completely, I mean total abandoned state, not schools neither health care and so.

The NGO (which name I won't put here) they started working in had financial support from Catholics mainly of the state of Pennsylvania. Their work were principally to start teaching sexual education based on natural methods in local communities that were all spread out in a vast territory, by traveling continuously in the most difficult conditions you can possible image driving cross country (no good roads existed), sleeping in tents and witnessing the poor conditions of poverty of those native people.

- Charles, why were you teaching sexual education based on natural methods ? -

Because several years before another NGO supported by the US government and with the (on purpose) blind of the local governments (military at those years mostly) started to come to these areas to "make a little operation" in women and giving them in exchange some dental free care and some money.

- Charles, why were they so interested in making that operation to women? -

Well, that's a long history, but I'll make it short for you, two waves of communist movements were in progress in this countries, in Bolivia the legacy of the "Che Gevara" guerrilla (Che Guevara was the second most important leader of the Cuban Revolution, that left Cuba to export the communist movement to other countries in this case Bolivia) that

mainly made a recruitment in small poor towns where was not government presence, in Peru the movement is known as "Sendero Luminoso" this last one far more left sided (Maoista = China's Mao tendency) but with the same strategy. So to answer your question, some people in north America's governments with the complicity of the local ones, thought that one good way to stop that communism expansion was to sterilize women without their knowledge, taking advantage of their ignorance so in the long run no more recruits could be available for communist supporters.

- Charles, are you telling me that they were virtually destroying the women capacity to be mothers ? -

Yes, by putting T cupper into their bodies.

Charles told me also that action of sterilization were conducted for about 3 years, and affected several thousands of woman.

- What exactly did you Charles ? -

We traveled by teaching in local language that they were not supposed to accept any of those operations, telling them that their capacity of having kids would be removed if they accepted, and at the same time, teaching them natural methods to control their desires of having children, since given the poverty of those people they certainly cannot afford to have as many children as they used to. We only did teach natural methods, since we all are Catholics supported by Catholic Church.

Charles also told me the damage made to so much women were impossible to correct and that some generation in those towns were affected by the reduction of the population. Charles traveled doing that job until his g/f Gris finished university , they both joined to keep the job in more urban areas, with the time it was found out that in not remote areas, but small and medium cities that sterilization policy was used too.

Why didn't you report that to the authorities ?

They knew and they did agree to what the US missionaries were doing to the local people (sterilization against their will), since the government were a dictatorship, the only possible and best way I could protest was by going deep in to the country and giving them some education, it was my duty as a Christian, I had no time to be angry or cry about that devil policy, I had to do something and I am proud of what I have done, as Gris my wife did it too for a few years.

Some time later I was born.

Charles and Gris are my parents.

Since when is the US government sending missionaries? If they want to travel there to try and convert people they can, only reason they couldn't in pre-WWII Japan and pre-war Iraq is that they would have been killed for doing so.

It's sad, and it's a huge problem, but some people see recently liberated people as nothing more than 'fresh meat' I suppose.

US government allowed christian missions by crushing the japanese shinto dictatorship, which was only to justify its militarism and aggressivity. I see there no problem or political pushing, altough if there were some "political intentions", it didn't any evil. Maybe christianity will make their leaders more peaceful and less thinking they are best people of the planet. Missions aren't violent converting as in medieval times, so wake up or put your eyes out of gold medal shine, which is blinding them.

Caid:

What would you say if Japan was sending Buddhist people in Canada to "bring peace and wisdom" while it got some views on USA in case it become militaristic?
