Because it's late, and I'm lazy, I think I'll ask a question here rather than Google for it all night. I'm doing some research for a short story.

How long (roughly, of course) has life existed on Earth? I mean since single-celled organisms. Also, how long has human life (homo sapiens, at least. Other stages would be preferable as well, but they're not incredibly important) existed?

Thanks in advance for any help. I should know this, and I have the wierdest feeling it's in my brain somewhere. But I think it (my brain) is on strike or something. Oh well, in two weeks, I'll be able to legally destroy it with alchohol without going Quebec-side. I'm rambling. 'Night, all!

Prokaryotes, the earliest organisms, were on earth for atleast 3.5 billion years, and lived and evolved alone for almost 2 billion. They are still evolving and living today. The earliest ancestry of hominid species goes back to 4.4 million years ago (appr.). Human sapiens species goes back to the neanderthalensis species at about 130,000 years ago.
