Acriku
I think it would be treason because you fight for Saddam, and then you do something against him or his country. Loyalty or not, he would be tried for treason.
Gobalopper
But would overthrowing your gov't be treason? Who is going to charge you now that you're in control?
Acriku
I think it would be, but with no one to prosecute it, then you get off scott-free. Unless you build a government that prosecutes treason, then you're screwed.
Gobalopper
But what about cases where the current ruler has overthrown a past ruler or does not allow other groups to come to power?
Acriku
It would be treason in the past tense, that is "The current ruler committed treason against the Shaka Republic, by taking it over." He'd still be guilty of treason against the past country, but not the current country. Again, IMO.
Gobalopper
Sorry I meant people who are working to overthrow that leader. Would the people of any country that are ruled by a dictatorship and are working to overthrow it be considered to be commiting treason? Acriku
Of course, taken from the very definition of it - but that isn't to say that they shouldn't.
Gobalopper
I think there is a fairly thin line in cases like that. I guess it would depend on who the people consider to be the leader. For example if a group is ousted from power but are still alive either outside the country or holding power over a small portion of it is it still treason to try to regain that power? Acriku
I don't think that they would be treason, as it isn't the "backstabbing" sense of treason.
Caid Ivik
I think treason has no absolute definition like other acts like murder, stealing or adultery has. It depends just on betrayed state or regime, how it deals with traitors.
