56k Modems

Is there anyway, either by editing the registry, using 3rd party programs or indeed other methods to speed up my 56k connection cos its just toooo slow =(.

You could try calling up your telephone line providers and ask them to check the line for noise

Well there is an optimum amount of noise so if you turn it down the speed should go up.

You could just get ADSL... ::)

Huh that sucks. If you search for them though there shuld be some tweaking tools on the web.

There is one way to get broadband.....

If you have Direct TV satilite, they have a satilite connection avaliable anywhere in US at a speed of about 500 kbs so not bad..

yes but imagine:

gets cloudy or stormy then BANG no connection.

Not it'll work in bad weather, slower but it'll still work...And hell its better then 56k my friend..

Satellite is not good for gaming though because the latency is very high. This is due to the fact that the signal has to travel to and from the satellite. This can take a few seconds and if the data gets corrupted you have to resend packets adding more time for data transfer. For downloading data and opening web pages it will be significantly faster, but for online games it actually may be slower.

In some areas you can get a WiFi connection. Somthimes up to a few kilometres. Although I only have experiances with a few meters, I've briefly worked with an 5km radius. It has some lag, althought in some areas it might be an or the only option.
