Guest Cylor856 Posted January 15, 2002 Posted January 15, 2002 Hi, I'm new in the Emperor fan community, and I'm having some problems I haven't seen covered in this thread. I've tried Westwood's tech support and they can't help me. I'm really not sure what to do at this point, so I'm hoping someone here will have some ideas for me.THE PROBLEM: I originally installed Emperor on my computer which came pre-loaded with Windows ME. I love the game but I was frustrated with ME's inherent instability, which would result in inevitable crashes after playing for a certain duration (usually half an hour or so). So I installed Windows XP a few weeks ago. Ever since then, I have been unable to get Emperor to run properly. The entire game has been slowed down so drastically that it's virtually impossible to play. Even the opening Westwood logos, which originally took about 10 seconds to run by, now take nearly 2 minutes. I had a similar problem with the movie sequences, but I managed to solve that. However, the biggest problem is in actual gameplay. The game will load without any problems, but as soon as there is any sort of on-screen action -- i.e., units firing at each other -- the entire game slows down to an absolute crawl. That includes mouse movement, units, scrolling, everything.I am not having any similar problems with any other game or application. Starcraft, Tiberian Sun, and Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds all run perfectly. (Although Tiberian Sun is annoying, but that's an opinion on the game, not a technical issue.)WHAT I'VE TRIED: I uninstalled the game after installing Windows XP, rebooted, and reinstalled it (Emperor). No change. I tried shutting down all non-system background programs, including Norton Antivirus, as I had to do that in ME. This solved the problem of choppy movie sequences, but made no difference in gameplay. I doubled my RAM to 512mb, thinking the XP operating system required more resources than I had available. No change. (Yes, I've already spent some substantial money trying to get this problem solved, so I'm a bit frustrated.) I've tried playing the game in both my DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives; no difference. I've searched for any driver updates which might be of any relevence to this problem, but I haven't been able to find much of anything for WinXP. As you've probably already guessed, I'm "semi-knowledgable" in these areas, but by no means an expert user.I am open to any suggestions anyone might have. I just want to be able to play Emperor, again... especially after upgrading my system for the express purpose of creating a more stable gaming environment.MY COMPUTER: HP Pavilion 7856PROCESSOR: AMD Athlon 1.2ghzOS: Windows XP Home Edition upgrade from WinMERAM: 512mbVIDEO CARD: Diamond Viper II w/ Win2000 drivers (as there aren't any available specifically for XP)----EASy System Summary-------------------------------------- Video Card : Video Driver : Driver Version : Sound Card : Sound Driver : Driver Version : DirectX : DirectX 7 Operating System Windows 2000 5.1.2600----EASy System Output--------------------------------------- Computer Name : BIOS Info Name : Version : PNP : Manufacturer : CPU Info CPU Count : 1 CPU Type : 1201 MHz AuthenticAMD Thunderbird 6 4 2 RAM : 511 MB Total 343 MB Free Virtual RAM : 867 MB Total 753 MB Free Operating System : Windows 2000 5.1.2600 Default Browser : Version : Temp Directory : C:DOCUME~1CD8342~1LOCALS~1Temp Size : 33 MB----------------------------------------------------------------Display Info-------------------------------------------- Number of Displays : 0 Current Mode (Primary) : 0 Refresh Rate (Primary) : Supported Display Modes | 16 | 256 | 16 bits| 24 bits| 32 bits --------------------------------------------------- 640 x 480| | | | | 800 x 600| | | | | 1024x 768| | | | | 1152x 864| | | | | 1280x1024| | | | | 1600x1200| | | | | ----------------------------------------------------------------Sound, Video and Game Controllers---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Direct X------------------------------------------------DirectX Info Version : DirectX 7DirectDraw Info Version : 5.01.2600.0000 Certified : Not certifiedDirectSound Info Version : 5.01.2600.0000 Certified : CertifiedDirectPlay Info Version : 5.00.2134.0001DirectInput Info Version : 5.01.2600.0000----------------------------------------------------------------Drive Information-------------------------------------------CDRom Info---------------------------------------------- Cache size : 0 KB Access Pattern : Drive Letter A Volume Name : Type : Floppy File System : Total Space : 0.00 KB Free Space : 0.00 KBDrive Letter C Volume Name : SINCRONOS Type : Fixed File System : FAT32 Total Space : 76.29 GB Free Space : 62.08 GBDrive Letter D Volume Name : Type : CDRom File System : Total Space : 0.00 KB Free Space : 0.00 KB Sec/MB : Test not performed Detected Speed : Test not performedDrive Letter N Volume Name : Type : CDRom File System : Total Space : 0.00 KB Free Space : 0.00 KB Sec/MB : Test not performed Detected Speed : Test not performed----------------------------------------------------------------Monitor Information-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Network Information-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Input Device Information--------------------------------Mouse Information Description : Type : Keyboard Information Description : IBM enhanced (101- or 102-key)----------------------------------------------------------------Modem Information--------------------------------------- Description : Driver : Provider : ----------------------------------------------------------------Glide/OpenGL Information--------------------------------Glide Info Glide2 Version : Glide3 Version : OpenGL Info Version : 5.1----------------------------------------------------------------Task List-----------------------------------------------[system process]systemsmss.execsrss.exewinlogon.exeservices.exelsass.exesvchost.exesvchost.exesvchost.exesvchost.exeExplorerspoolsv.exeimgicon.exehp_finder.exeusbmmkbd.exeLogitech Mouse Controlnavapw32.exewcmdmgr.exeypager.exemsmsgs.exeaim.exeicq.exevplus.exeyacsmon.exealg.exenavapsvc.exenprotect.exenopdb.exeez.exe----------------------------------------------------------------Autoexec.bat--------------------------------------------SET windir=C:WINDOWSSET winbootdir=C:WINDOWSSET COMSPEC=C:WINDOWSCOMMAND.COMSET PATH=C:WINDOWS;C:WINDOWSCOMMANDSET PROMPT=$p$gSET TEMP=C:WINDOWSTEMPSET TMP=C:WINDOWSTEMPSET CLASSPATH="C:Program FilesJavaSoftJRE1.3.1libextQTJava.zip"SET QTJAVA="C:Program FilesJavaSoftJRE1.3.1libextQTJava.zip"----------------------------------------------------------------Config.sys----------------------------------------------*empty*------------------------------------------------------------X_CASE_STARTX_CASE_DESCRIPTION: X_CONTACT_FIRST_NAME: X_CONTACT_LAST_NAME: X_GAME: X_SERIAL_KEY: X_OPERATING_SYSTEM: Windows 2000 , Version 5.1, Build 2600X_PROCESSOR: ThunderbirdX_SPEED: 1201 MHzX_MMX: NoX_RAM: 511 MBX_MANUFACTURER: X_PRODUCT_ID: X_VIDEO_CARD: X_DISPLAY_DRIVER: X_DISPLAY_DIRECTX: Not Certified, No Hardware SupportX_DISPLAY_MEMORY: 0 MBX_AUDIO_CERTIFIED: CertifiedX_AUDIO_DRIVERS: X_MODEM: X_V_MANUFACTURER: X_A_MANUFACTURER: X_CASE_END
Nyarlathotep Posted January 15, 2002 Author Posted January 15, 2002 Cylor856, did you try running the game in Windows 9x/ME compatibility mode ? Does Windows XP have any drivers for your videocard ? I have to admit, I'm no expert on Windows XP, but I'll do anything I can and will get back to you with other suggestions.Btw, before anyone asks, his e-report didn't come out correctly cause of Windows XP/2000.I am sure he's having DirectX 8.1"Doc" Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted January 15, 2002 Author Posted January 15, 2002 Here's a site wich has an XP driver for the Viper 2 (tweaked):http://www.hastec.nl/drivers/diamond/viper2/viper2.htmIt's Dutch though.."Doc" Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted January 15, 2002 Author Posted January 15, 2002 Duke, any news from your side ??"Doc" Nyar...
Guest Cylor856 Posted January 15, 2002 Posted January 15, 2002 Sorry, I forgot to include that in my original post...Yes, I did try the Win98/ME compatibility mode. No, it didn't work. Same problem.I'll try the Dutch driver for the Viper II, and see if it helps anything... thanks for your input so far.
Guest Cylor856 Posted January 15, 2002 Posted January 15, 2002 Not having much luck with that driver... my computer seems to prefer the Win2k drivers.
Nyarlathotep Posted January 15, 2002 Author Posted January 15, 2002 Ok, I'll see what I can come up with.."Doc" Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted January 16, 2002 Author Posted January 16, 2002 BRabbit, any news/luck/update ?"Doc" Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted January 16, 2002 Author Posted January 16, 2002 Cylor856, could you provide me with the specs of your comp, as detailed as possible. As you may have seen, the EASy program doesn't work well for NT/2000/XP..Also, provide me with some programs you have installed (copy programs, virus scanners ect, ect)."Doc" Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted January 17, 2002 Author Posted January 17, 2002 Ok, that's all I needed to know for now.."Doc" Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted January 17, 2002 Author Posted January 17, 2002 Radar, did you hear anything back from Westwood ?"Doc" Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted January 17, 2002 Author Posted January 17, 2002 Cylor856, I've searched for solutions for your problem and there are several things that could cause it. I think it can be caused by 3 things:1) Driver for your videocard. It's going to be tricky, but I would suggest to mail your card manufacturer and ask them if they intend to release an XP driver. If not, try and see if you can borrow a card from a friend or something, which has XP drivers.2) Other drivers. I've read many cases where for example the driver for a cdrom changed the whole thing for the better (especially DVD and CD-rw). As I do not know what you have in your system, I can't comment on anything else.3) Security. This is the most interesting. XP has a lot more security settings then the OS' before. A lot of people are complaining about lag in games with XP. However, I haven't been able to see if they were complaining about online games or single player. For this reason I would like to know if it lags in multiplayer, or both multiplayer and single player. Also, now that vou've re-installed EBFD, you did apply all the patches again right (meaning up to 1.09) ? Also I couldn't tell from your post if you tried some of the suggestions on page 26. If not, I would try them if I were you.I will get back with more. In the meantime, let me know how things are going.."Doc" Nyar...
Guest Cylor856 Posted January 18, 2002 Posted January 18, 2002 Nyar, the lags I'm experiencing are occuring in single player mode. I haven't tried it in multiplayer. I've tried switching the game's graphic settings to the lowest possible level but there is no change. The slowdown is noticable immediately from the point that the Westwood logos begin to load, and also with the scrolling background text on the game's title screen.I'll continue searching for XP drivers for my video card, although as I'd mentioned, I'm not experiencing any similar problems with any other game or applications...I've searched for other drivers for my DVD-ROM (Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-116) and CD-RW (Mitsumi CR-48X5TE) drives as well, but have been unable to find any. After reinstalling the game, I did immediately update it to version 1.09. I haven't attempted any of the fixes listed on page 26, because as I read through it, none of the problems listed there resembled mine and most deal with Win98/ME. I could still try some things if you think it might help.If there is any further information you need from me, please let me know. Thanks for your patience with me. I hope I'm not coming off as a total lost cause, here...
Nyarlathotep Posted January 18, 2002 Author Posted January 18, 2002 Cylor856, no thanks needed. I will try to help you as much as I can. I'm still going over some issues and I'll let you know if I find anything that could help to resolve your problem (although I think a patch from Westwood is needed to resolve the problems XP users have with EBFD).."Doc" Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted January 18, 2002 Author Posted January 18, 2002 Cylor856, could you still provide me with some more specs of your system (hardware in it) and what kind of user software you've installed ?"Doc" Nyar...
Guest Cylor856 Posted January 18, 2002 Posted January 18, 2002 I certainly hope that Westwood can be convinced to devise a patch to resolve the XP problems... because I'd like to be able to play Emperor again, someday.
Guest DevastatorElite Posted January 18, 2002 Posted January 18, 2002 Nyar, I am curious. Do you honestly think that Westwood will give us a new patch? For a game that didn't earn them much of a increase in salary, will they actually care to make a new patch? Westwood claims that the problems are with drivers, but I doubt it. The crashing problem in Emperor is different for nearly every machine. The solution is not set in stone. I believe it has something to do with the code in the game. Maybe something interfering with the operating system or something.Wasn't there many complaints about the RA2 crashing problem? Westwood never found the answer and denied the problem until a fan sent it their machine for testing. Is this the same problem with Emperor, Nyar? One last thing, does C&C1 and RA1 run in Windows XP? It read on the Theatre of War box that the XP-compatibility download is on their web site, but I never found it...
Guest Cylor856 Posted January 19, 2002 Posted January 19, 2002 I can run Tiberian Sun and Dune 2000 in Windows XP with no problems whatsoever. The only game I've had any trouble with is Emperor... which happens to be my favorite RTS game of all time (natch). As for more information about my computer, it's an HP Pavilion 7865... I'll give you more detailed information about my hardware and software below, and you can also take a look at http://www.hp.com/cposupport/prodhome/hppavilion31320.html to see some of HP's own info on these machines. Please note that it originally came loaded with Windows ME, and I recently upgraded to XP Home Edition. I confess that I'm not certain precisely what information you're looking for here, so please excuse me if I give you some irrelevant info, and let me know if I omit anything crucial.PROCESSOR: AMD Athlon 1.20ghzHARD DRIVE: Maxtor 98196H8VIDEO CARD: Diamond Multimedia Viper II Z200 (w/ Win2000 drivers)DISC DRIVES: Mitsumi CR-48X5TE, Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-116FLOPPY DISK: Standard 3 1/2"KEYBOARD: HP Multimedia USB keyboardMOUSE: Logitech Mouseman Wheel (optical)MONITOR: Phillips 107S 17"NETWORK CARD: RealTek RTL8139/810X Family PCT Fast Ethernet NICSOUND CARD: Riptide Audio DeviceAnd some of the software I've installed...Adaptec UDF ReaderAdobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 and 5.05Adobe Framemaker 6.0Adobe Illustrator 9.0.1Adobe ImageReady 3.0Adobe PhotoShop 6.01Adobe Product/Adobe Studio Update 10/2001Adobe Type ManagerBackwebBeatnik PlayerCatchUp v1.3Nero Burning ROM 5 (web installer)Netscape/AOL Instant Messenger 4.7Quicktime Player 5.0.2CDex 1.40Tiberian SunDune 2000Emperor: BFDeHelpEmperor Desktop ThemepackGoldWave 4.25HP Internet CenterHP WildTangent GamesICQ 2001bICQ Plus 3.0Iomega App ServicesIomegaWareWinDVD 2.8Java 2 Runtime Environment 1.3.1Java 2 Runtime Environment 1.3.1_01Java 2 SDK 1.3.1_01Logitech Mouseware 9.41.2Logitech User's GuideMedia Library Management WizardMS Money 2001MS Office XP 2002 Professional w/ FrontPageWindows Media Encoder 7.01MS Works 6.0My Photo Center (Arcsoft)Net2PhoneNetscape Communicator 4.79Netscape 6.2.1Netscape SmartDownload 1.5 (disabled)Norton Antivirus 2002Norton System Works 5.0.1LiveRegLiveUpdate 1.7One-touch Multimedia KeyboardPC-Doctor for WindowsPlus! Guest davidsonf Posted January 19, 2002 Posted January 19, 2002 Dear Nyar, Firstly, thanks for spending the time to help everyone here! I hope you can help me! Here the problem: the game works fine until I try certain mouse movements, most consistently, when I try to click & drag to select multiple objects, but othertimes as well, such as in a battle trying to select targets. I can't even get through the tutorial! I've read all the posts here and tried all the tricks. I've reinstalled. Nuked everything except systray & explore. Updated all my drivers: video, sound, mouse, DirectX. Reinstalled after deleting the registry entries. I've even flashed the BIOS. Tried most of the tips on this board. I've got a Dell Dimension V400, 400Ghz, with zip drive & DVD. I've also submitted this to Westwood Tech Support, but haven't gotten a reasonable reply yet. I've attached my dxdiag.txt & easy_ea.txt files. If so, It's going to be difficult, as the minimum system req. state 16mb videocard. Never the less, try setting your desktop resolution to 800x600, 256 color settings. Also, do you have any other videocard you could try ?Let me know how it went."Doc" Nyar...
