Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 btw, number6, if the game works for you without any probs, post the E report and dxdiag output here if you can :DNyar...
number6 Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 Nyar, I just had a thought that may be helpful. On my system I don't allow Windows to manage the virtual memory. I set a size for a static swap file that always exists. I use the old Unix formula for swap space which is 2 times the physical memory. Since I have 256MB physical RAM I set a 512MB swap file. I did this a while back to improve game performance, since every time windows falls below a certain memory threshold it allocates some hard drive space to virtual memory, this can cause jerkiness when movies are playing in the game. I know that Microsoft advises against users managing virtual memory. This is something that can be safely tested and restored back if it does not appear to help the freeze problem for some people. I am really grasping at this point. I was just thinking what might be different in my configuration than the people having this problem.

Guest dune01 Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 Somebody (Nyar) HELP me!! I am posting my latest EA report and my DXDIAG report. Here is what's going on now:My game was freezing up, so I upgraded my drivers for my video card and for my sound card to what appears to be the latest versions. I then ran the DirectX 8a install. I was then able to play 3 missions without any lockups, although even before I upgraded the drivers I could sometimes do this. I am playing a Single Player Campaign. I have gotten to the point when I am about to wipe out the Harkonnen's City. The video plays with the Duke in it giving his pep talk. It then goes to the load screen, the status bar loads all the way and then it crashes to the desktop every time. Every time I finish a mission, I save the game in 2 slots, in case one gets corrupted. Both of my save slots crash to the desktop when loaded. I can load games from earlier missions and they load and play fine. Also, my movies play without a problem. And lastly, I am running Emperor -c, because I have a VooDoo3 3500.EA Report:----EASy System Summary-------------------------------------- Video Card : 3dfx Voodoo3 3500 TV Video Driver : 3dfx16v3.drv Driver Version : 4.12.01.1225 Sound Card : 3dfx Voodoo3 TV VFW Sound Driver : Driver Version : DirectX : DirectX 8 Operating System Windows 98 A 4.10.2222----EASy System Output--------------------------------------- Computer Name : BIOS Info Name : Version : PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.0 PNP : Manufacturer : (Standard system devices)CPU Info CPU Count : 1 CPU Type : 848 MHz GenuineIntel 6 8 3 RAM : 127 MB Total 80 MB Free Virtual RAM : 1920 MB Total 1893 MB Free Operating System : Windows 98 A 4.10.2222 Default Browser : Internet Explorer Version : 5.0.2614.3500 Temp Directory : C:WINDOWSTEMP Size : 106 KB----------------------------------------------------------------Display Info-------------------------------------------- Number of Displays : 1 Current Mode (Primary) : 1024x768 16 Refresh Rate (Primary) : Optimal refresh ratePrimary display device Description : 3dfx Voodoo3 3500 TV Manufacturer : 3dfx Interactive, Inc. Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 I think any OS will do, just as long as the game runs fine, that's the only must.Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 Alley, after going over -x-ray's sisters E report, I've noticed she's using a lower driver for her voodoo card:Alley's driver info:Main Driver : 3dfx16v3.drvVersion : 4.12.01.0666Provider : 3dfx -x-ray's sisters driver info:Main Driver : 3dfx16vb.drvVersion : 4.11.01.1222Provider : 3dfx Interactive, Inc.I think -x-ray's sister is using driver 1.05 ? If so, -x-ray, is the driver (packed) still on the comp ? If so, is there anyway you can provide it to Alley ? or post the link where you've gotten it from.Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 dune01, sure I'll help, you know me :DNyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 Oh, one other thing, do skirmish games give you the same problem ?Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 Nevermind, just noticed there's a difference... *sigh*Nyar...
Guest alley_cat Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 Soon I'm going to my web course where I'll have access to the internet, but not to my comp.so I promise I'll install the 1.05 as soon as I get back home.In the meantime, could you please find me a working link to the 1.05 that is not what Chris gave, and is not this link: http://www.akvasan.co.yu/sr/internet_ftp_drivers_video_voodoo.html since the voodoo 1.05 there is broke.Thank you in advance. :)
Guest alley_cat Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 And btw, the reason his sister isn't using the same driver version as mine is because she is using a Voodoo Banshee as far as I understand, and I'm using a voodoo3.
Guest dune01 Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 I've done most of the stuff that I have seen in the forums and on the FAQ. I haven't tried skirmish or on-line. I've only got 56K where I live. I have added all of the same information to my open problem ticket w/ WW Tech Support. Thanks again, Nyar.
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 Like said, there's a difference in drivers, just saw it a bit late. Guess I'm trying to grab any issue with both hands to try and solve your issues *lol*Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 *sighs and then there's an absoluut silence*
Guest alley_cat Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 I'm still at my course at the moment, but I found a few links for the 1.05 drivers, which I will install as soon as I get home. But lets say I install it, how will glsetup (which I have installed) will react?
Guest alley_cat Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 And as you may have noticed, the mods are up and awake now, but don't really take the time to respond here... :(
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 Alley, I honestly don't know how things will react.About the mods..yes...I've noticed, that's why I posted *sigh and then a big silence* :(But I guess after these posts, they'll reply.. I'll give it a bit more time and then will post a new topic...Nyar...[This message has been edited by Nyarlathotep (edited 07-26-2001).]
number6 Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 alley_cat, Thanks for the acknowledgment, and it's no problem. I enjoy helping people (as best I can anyway) who truly want to get the game working. I have had this type of problem before, so I know how frustrating it can be.nyar, When I get home from work I will post a copy of my easy report in this thread.
Guest Duke_Leeeto Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 Well, I'm not gonna bother to post an Easy_EA report as I have posted enough of them already. I'm not downloading the latest driver again for Rage Fury Pro 128 after my last fiasco. Apparently, there is a VIRUS in that driver! That much I am certain. When I got it, my friends told me they received e-mails from me that contained a virus, but I didn't even send them! All this happened when I downloaded that driver! Also, I had to reformat my computer as my Explorer had a fatal error and most of my programs were lagging badly. . .Nyar, I tried all of your suggestions up above, they were some of the first things I did, just common computer sense mostly, but didn't help. I did play Skirmish, it did freeze on me, but after a much longer lenght of time. (I made the game as long as possible) It froze around just past an hour.I checked my DirectX8 files and I noticed something strange even tho it says there are no problems. Many of my files are not year 2000. Many are 1999, some are even 1998! I also have 1 file that is 2001. Quite strange, but I wouldn't be surprised if my DirectX 8 has something to do with this. On one of my comps at school, I didn't install DirectX 8 and kept the older version of DirectX and it ran slow, but was playable. The good thing about it was it never froze for hours on end!
