I have a Cable Modem which is connected directly to my network card and I always shut down my Firewall software (Black Ice Defender) before starting up Emperor. Why can't I play online? My cable modem is an GE Surfboard 3100D. After being kicked out of games I always check my speed at http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ with the most demanding settings and my downstream is always around 1200 M per second and my upstream is always around 70 K per second. Guest alley_cat Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 btw, I downloaded the new Bink player as Chris told me, and I had no problem running the movies that are on the hard drive and have the *bik extension using the bink player. It is only in the game that I am having the problems. I was also able to use the bink player to run the *rfd file that is on the cdrom, also without a problem.Btw, I was wondering why the EA and Westwood logo don't get freezed? they are also in the bik format.

Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 You know what's bugging me... in the DirectX files, some of the dates are 1999 or even older. I do not know if it means anything, but that's the only similarity I can find for Alley_cat, jeromeku and -x-ray. You all have freezing problems. I'll copy my dxdiag output below so that you can cross reference and see what I mean. All my files are 2000 or 2001... As aid, the game works for me, but doesn't for you and this is the only difference I could find, besides hardware of course..------------------System Information------------------Time of this report: 7/26/2001, 12:49:33 Machine name: GeForce 3 Operating System: Microsoft Windows ME (4.90, Build 3000) Language: English (Regional Setting: Dutch)System Manufacturer: System Manufacturer System Model: System Name BIOS: Award Medallion BIOS v6.0 Processor: Intel Pentium III, ~1005MHz Memory: 512MB RAM Page File: 213MB used, 1322MB available DirectX Version: DirectX 8.0 (4.08.00.0400)DX Setup Parameters: Not found DxDiag Version: 4.08.00.0400------------DxDiag Notes------------ DirectX Files Tab: No problems found. Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 Alley_cat, so the movies that are on the harddrive work now, while before they didn't ?Nyar...
Guest alley_cat Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 No, no. That isn't what I said. There is a program called Bink player which Chris appearently asked me to download. It is a normal program such as the media player who can run movies, including the movie files that the game uses. when I used this program, I was able to open all the movie files that are on the HD, and the movie file which is on the CD, but only through the program itself. The movies are still freezing in the game as usual.
Guest alley_cat Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 I reinstalled Directx, and the files stayed from the same date. I think that as long as it is the same file version it is o.k. It may happened because you have a later OS (ME maybe?) or that you have a newer computer, of that you installed Directx later.
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 Alley, if you search for *bink*.* with what does the comp come up with ?Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 About directx, I don't know. All I knowis that jeromeku is using Windows 2000, You are using windows 98, same as X-ray and I'm running ME. So we have a mixture of OS systems...Maybe someone else, who's running just fine and has ME could post his dxdiag output here..Nyar...
number6 Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 alley_cat,You said:"You know, that fact that the same lockup problem happened on diffrent computers with very diffrent hardware should show that this problem is fixable by Westwood." This does not show anything, other than there are numerous PC configurations out there. Somehow Westwood is supposed to just figure it out? They are not miracle workers and they don't have every piece of hardware/software installed in every possible configuration. "Also, the fact that this only happens on campiagns and not on the whole game should also show that this is not a driver/hardware problem, since a thing like that couldn't possibly a hardware problem."It still could be a hardware problem, the code might be accessing the hardware differently in this mode of operation. That does not create a software problem. If Westwood disabled the part of code that works different here and released it as a patch then that could cause problems on other peoples hardware. Unless a majority of the users experiences this problem they should not change the code to accomodate a handful of users. You obviously didn't read my response to one of your posts in another thread, here's the thread:http://messagebrd.westwood.ea.com/boards/emp/english/Forum1/HTML/007144.htmlI can't prove it's a hardware problem, but you also can't prove that it's a problem with the code.
Guest alley_cat Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 Thats my point - since you have an ME, which is a later OS that ours, maybe the files within it came in a later date to your comp, but it is still the same file with the same version, so I don't think it is the problem. I'm sure you'll find many people who run the game fine on Win98, and the files in their dxdiag are too from 1999.
Guest alley_cat Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 Why can't I? The campaign and the Skirmish are basically the same thing, only that the campaign have some extra code and scripts in it that obviously causes the game to freeze only on campaign, right? So how can it be a problem that is only caused by the hardware? It is caused by the extra scripting/coding in the campaign. I know that it doesn't happen on all hardware, but it still means that somethign in the code makes some hardware go wrong. Is it an acceptable thing to say?
Guest alley_cat Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 Nyar, I didn't really understood what you meant about the search thing. The bink files have the extension of *.bik
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 As already stated before, it has to be a combo...I need WW's help to identify what the differences between the two modes are.In the mean time, let's focus on getting this resolved with all we can come up with.Nyar...
Guest -X-ray Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 well, i played through my sister's computer, which doesn't even stand the minimum requirements and... the game worked just fine.this is really frustrating, my computers is at least three times better than her and the game doesn't work here :-{
number6 Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 Your right that the same code causes problems on different hardware, but it is not the responsibility of Westwood to track these problems down and patch there code to fix this. They will certainly help as best they can in tracking down the problem. It is the responsibility of the user to find out what piece of hardware on their system is causing the incompatability and contact that vendor for a possible fix. The hardware vendor controls their patches, not westwood. It's not a game pacth issue at this point.
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 I know, but it's been stated to replace the bink.dll. I couldn't find that file on my comp, but found binkw32.dll (in several game folders to be accurate). That's why I asked to search for *bink*.*As I do not know if the file Chris mentioned was the exact one meant, or he meant the one above, that's what I'm trying to find out..Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 number6, thanks for the files, as always, any help is appreciated :)One question, do you experiance any lock up problems ?Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 -X-ray, post her famous E report plz and dxdiag output..if it's not to much to ask :DNyar...
Guest alley_cat Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 *sigh* and it doesn't seem like the Westwood team is swarmign to this thread (even if they read it but don't reply). It's a shame, thie topic could really clear A LOT of things up with the combined help of the WW team and us as the ones who will report and test their suggestions and ideas. If the WW team can spend some time here, I'm sure we will be able together, get some results.
Nyarlathotep Posted July 26, 2001 Author Posted July 26, 2001 Uhm, aren't they still a sleep ?Have no clue what time it's there, my guess there's a6 to 9 hour time difference and here it's now just past 2pm...And Alley, positive as I am, cheer up, they're reading it and will come to this topic *starts to pray* :DNyar...
Guest alley_cat Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 I also only found binkw32.dll in several folders (Emperor, Startopia, RA2).And number6, I understand what you say, but I know that my hardware is 100% up to date, and meets the minimum requirements, so the game SHOULD runit just fine, right? And if you don't believe me you can check my EAsy report. There is no way I'm going to spend extra funds on a new Video card just to get the game to work properly, where my current hardware meets the minimum requirements, and should work just fine, do you agree with me on that? So if you ask me, there is nothing the hardware vendor can do at this point, since I have all the latest drivers and he wasn't the one who created the code that made the game freeze on me.Again, I'm not flaming Westwood in any way, I just think we should get things in proportion, and get the help i most deserve.Btw, I'm going to bump this topic constantly, if needed, until some results are found.
number6 Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 nyar, only when playing online. Every time a game ends online my computer either freezes or reboots. Weird. I use a cable modem and I think Westwood didn't optimize the game to work with broadband connections. I don't know for sure what the problem is. As you can see in my directx listing, a few files are dated 1998. Every time you upgrade directx not all files have newer versions that's why I think it's OK to have files that are dated older. The direct 3D specific stuff should always get updated.
Guest alley_cat Posted July 26, 2001 Posted July 26, 2001 Nyar and number6, there are no words I can find to show how I appreciate your help, I really do. :)But at the moemnt, you seem to be the only ones who try and help me, and currently I don't see how Westwood is going to fix this on a patch. So yes, I'm totally frustrated and even more tired than before.
