Instead of disabling your soundcard use the -S option in the command line, just found out about it today. It turns off all sound in the game so you don't have to disable the sound card.

Nyar,

I install the 1.04 drivers for my Voodoo3 and the game still freezes up on me so at this point I don't know what to do....I guess just save game and play, save game and play, til it freezes up on me. Any other suggestions would be appreciated...

Nyarlathotep,

I have actually done that. I have two sound cards that I have been trying to get to work. An MX300 and a SB 16.

The -s in the command line sounds plausible but hell I wanna enjoy the game, sound and all. :(

I have no VIA chipset. I have an Asus CUSL with a NVIDIA Geforce 3. I do have a Soundblaster Live.

I have managed to get the game running , without shadows, but I agree with the reviewer's point that you shouldn't have to go through all of this trama for one game.

Max Payne runs fine. So does every other game I own.

Only Dune forced me to buy a new hard drive, a new video card and a new insatall of windows.

One thing the reviewer will not realize since he has only played the game for 5 minutes, is all of this hassle was worth it!

I love the game., I just wish I could run it in all it's graphical glory.

And the Gamer's Press guy says, and I quote:

"The suggested fix was to download new motherboard drivers from VIA – something I’m not nuts about doing for one game."

He won't update his drivers.

"the crashing problem is related to a confirmed problem that Emperor has with the combination of a VIA Motherboard Chipset (pretty darn common) and SBLive! Soundcards (REALLY darn common)."

That has only affected about 10 people since the game's release. Gobalopper is one of them, and we are working to track down the issue, but we believe we have ruled out the sound card.

"In short, I absolutely cannot recommend this game because it simply doesn’t work."

Says him. We have had a small number of technical problems that we are continuing to work on. I personally have tried the game on over 2 dozen machines, and have never once seen this problem.

"The other scenario involves Westwood not testing this very common hardware combination... that couldn't possibly be the case, right Westwood?!?"

It's been tested. It's been retested. Hell, we even got Gobalopper's soundcard from him in an effort to try and find the problem. BELIEVE ME, WE'RE LOOKING.

Once we know more, you'll know more.

But I get a real kick out of the fact that the reviewer didn't try any other computer, just assumed it was our fault. Perfectly objective journalism for you. Oh wait, no, it's not.

*shakes his head*

Installing new drivers for his VIA chipset isn't traumatizing at all. It is a well known problem and not hard to do at all. I will admit some problems take a little longer then most, mine would be one :), but most are solved by reading the support pages or contacting WW.

Posted

Devinoch, I didn't think you would reply on that issue :)

Let me reassure you that not everyone shares the same opinion as the writer of that article 8)

bizmaster, my system specs:

Asus CUSCLC-2 mainboard

Asus v8200 Geforce 3

SBLive! Value

Windows ME

Seems darn close to your specs...

The game runs fine on my system, shadows turned on.

Mess,

I upgraded to 512 k ram right before i bought the game and had problems as well. Have you tried removing the RAM?

That reviewer who complained about installing VIA drivers is a real looser in my opinion. Did he ever think there was something wrong with his system? How does a person like this get to review games? Based on that review I have little faith in that website for accurate reporting. Just about every other review I have read is positive towards the game. I do think that the game has been highly optimized towards the Intel chipset and that's why people with AMD motherboards are having problems. These problems can be fixed with a little bit of work and diligence. I do know that a small percent of people have been trying to fix compatability problems and are still struggling, I feel your pain. Sorry to post off topic on this, but I had to voice my opinion on this "REVIEW of Emperor".

Well i installed Windows XP. I had to re-install Dune in order to play cuase the first time I tries to play it just crashed to desktop.

After re-install and patch, I turned everything on max and loaded my current Ordos Mission. The game played flawlessly for about 20 minutes. then as I scrooled to the northwest corner of the map, the screen froze for about a minute, then a brief blue screen of death which flashed so quick I couldn't read it, then my machine automatically rebooted.

When XP restarted , I got a message that a serious error had occured related to my NVIDIA Geoforce 3.

I am just going to live with no Shadows from what I saw, they look cool, but are not worth the hassle !

Posted

bizmaster,

Do you have proper cooling for your video card/Case? The problem with the game crashing after 20 minutes of play sounds a lot like one of your components is overheating. Just a thought.

Posted

bizmaster, I tend to agree with number6. Try removing the casing from your comp. If you can, place a fan and let it cool your comp. See if it helps you in any way.

Commander Jamont, you said "it seems like after the new patch multiplayer wont work for me anymore", does that mean that it worked before, but now you installed the new patch you're getting this problem ? It would be weird, cause it supposingly should've fixed multiplayer issues.

Another thing I've noticed, is that you have 2 different lauguage files for your DirectX. Due to the fact that the game worked before< I hardly believe it's the cause of your prob, but it ain't something I would recommend.

2nd thing is, I do not think we can help you much, cause the game worked for you, but stopped after installing the new patch. I would recommend to get help (again, I know) from WW tech support. E-mailing tech support in Holland isn't going to work (tried it :(

Ondanks dat, goed weekend ! :D

Nyar...
