Timenn
Ok, I know how the heighliners travel. They fold the space so the distance they have to travel is nothing anymore. But how do they do that exactly? They need spice. But how do they fold exactly. And how can they after that travel 'without moving'. Hmm maybe a post the Guild can answer... burseg_candor
"....the Navigators project their mental thoughts onto the Holtzman engines and incluided in those thoughts is the destination and origin points. The Holtzman engines then act upon that information."~Ixian Technology: Heighliner Editionthat about explains it
Nefud
Nema Fakei wrote this:"The Holtzman Effect Overview This phenomenon is caused by a wave, the Holtzman wave, whichis related to light and the EM spectrum - but is not of that spectrum. For wheereas light is radiation - it induces heat in substances which absorb it - the Holtzman wave (or H-wave) induces a kinetic force. Light encourages viration in one manner (spacially), but the H-wave encourages another form of vibration - a quantum/temporal vibration. Because of this temporal relationship, a number of things are possible, when the H-wave is properly used - i.e with the formulae discovered by Tio Holtzman. Suspensors By creating a temporal slope at a certain distance, a force can be exerted constantly over a finite area. This is used in suspensors. They usually just push upwards. This is the most simple use of the Holtzman equations Shields The same idea is used here - but the force is oscillating, to allow for 2-way interchange of slow particles so the user does not suffocate or decompress due to the fact that no air can diffuse into the shield area. However, there are a number of side-effects that require explanation. First is that the necessary 2-way force means that a slow projectile can penetrate a shield. Second is the laser-shield reaction. Lasers are effectively light and electricity combined. A shield is an electrically charged Holtzman Field. The shield's electricity at least is Alternating Current (it varies from +ve to -ve many times a second) - so when a laser hits a shield, at some point, a powerful circuit is made (the more so that the carriers have no mass). But the H-wave and Light are such that in this circuit, in which they are the conductors, will destabilise every participating atom. While the (enormous) electric current is stripping atoms of their electrons and replacing them at high speed, the nucleus is vibrating temporally and spacially - which usually causes the nucleal particles themselves to destabilise... and the subatomic reaction occurs. Folding Space There are two parts to folding space: Firstly, to identify the unique spacial properties of the destination, and secondly, attuning the desired cargo to the same properties. The former is done by the navigator, using the spice-given prescience to find this out. The latter is acheived by means of a low frequency Holtzman wave, configured directly by the navigator. Note that any interference in this waves by holtzman fields will change the entire cargo's spacial properties, and they will be left in a totally different part of space. It is suspected that similar things can be acheived with light. One manifestation of this is the invention of solidoprojectors that restrict light to a certain shape that illuminates only itself. But the remaining formulae have yet to be discovered... "(Don't forget: Nema was the author!!!)
