[RELEASE] Dune 2000 Tile Set Editor

Recommended Posts

Posted

A new addition to the D2K+ toolkit in the form of a tileset editor, allowing you to export tileset images, edit then, reimport and save the tileset.

Dune 2000 Tile Set Editor

Vk6cB.png

Feature Set:

* Supports loading and saving of both R8 and R16 tilesets

* Supports exporting of tileset images for editing in picture editors like Photoshop or Paint.Net and importing the image back in

* Automatic palette conversion for R8 images, when importing an image the closest palette colours are chosen.

Future Work Will Include:

* Supporting editing of the associated TileSet data file (TILEATR*.BIN)

Please note: This is an Alpha release, it is unlikely to be stable and may suffer from bugs. I recommend you back up your files/installation before editing.

If you don't mind, I do have some small crit.

1) There is no readme.txt with instructions and who made it etc. I would suggest to zip your exe and add the readme.txt file, but that is just me.

2) The load/export/save windows always use the last position, this is not nice. I export to a different place then I import the r8/r16.

3) Some tiles are not clear were they end because they are all stitched together. Maybe add an option to add a pink border (1 - 3px) to the images (that when importing is gone of course).

4) It would be nice to have some extra info, like when hovering over a tile it will show the size, the number, a small preview when the tile is repeated.... (to be honest, this is more like a "when you got time feature", not so important right now)

5) it lacks an icon, so I made one: afro.gif

Thanks for your feedback,

1) Ok, I'll try to write a quick tutorial for it

2) Yeah, the trouble with this is I imagine everyone has a different way they'd like to work so I can't really see one system making everyone happy

3) If you edit the images in Photoshop or Gimp they both support grids, just set it to 32pixel square and it should work fine. However I'll see about adding an option for exporting with a 1 pixel border around tiles.

4) I don't want to sound like I'm keeping shooting down ideas, but as far as I'm aware the tile grouping was invented by Shaihulud, I've seen no evidence of the grouping anywhere in the Dune game and it wouldn't make sense to preserve the original tilesets grouping when the editor will mean you can change it to however you like. A preview mode with repeated tiles should be easy to do, perhaps with a setting so you can change the number of tiles that get repeated (e.g. 1x1 2x2 2x3) so that you can get this repeated group effect kind of manually.

5) Thanks for the icon, I'll use it in the next release :)

Ah, it's indeed all made up from 32x32, I did not know that. :) Does make sense actually... :D

There is already some snow in BLOXICE, I tried to make it bigger, but it does not look good.

Something useless I made because of this tool (made all tiles grey):

I meant replacing the sand with snow. A polar tileset would be awesome.
