I don't remember seeing this anywhere but I just read about it in the economist, because i'm just that pretentious, and it seems google is trying to get in on the world of social networking.

The Wave is invitation only and seems to create a more dynamic (not sure what that means in this context but gosh doesn't it sound cool) email environment. Bascially it's Twitter with more substance.
