If the units were based on real life vehicles...

Umm... what for? Dune units are entirely fictional, even though some of them bear a certain degree of resemblance to some real-life vehicles. With the obvious exclusions of the Harvester (taken from the movie, which, in turn, followed the description in the book) and the Carryall (designed by the Dune II dev team , since the carryalls from Lynch's Dune looks like a flying toppled wardrobe garbage container with ropes extending from it :P). Oh, and the 'thopter, too, is entirely fictional.

Let me be nitpicky (I'm in that mood now :D):

images that beer a bigger degree of resemblance

Seriously, though, the only objection I can make that this one is clearly a toy, not a vehicle. Besides, it seems to be a toy ornithopter (from Dune), not a toy model of a real-life aircraft that resembles an ornithopter.

They look like somebody was very lazy and simply used the hi-res versions of C&C infantry in Dune2000. Or maybe it was done on purpose, to show that these games are from the same "brand"..?
