Tonight I tried to play Emperor online for the first time in about two years, and it refused to work. It worked before from the same computer, so I know the problem is not caused by the installation.

Every time we were trying to start a game on the server, I got a failed handshake. I turned off my firewalls and I still got failed handshakes. I played around with some internet options, such as reducing IE security settings to a minimum and turning off real-time protection in Spybot: Search & Destroy, but it did not help.

Then we tried connecting in a virtual LAN using hamachi. The connection itself was established well and we could talk in the LAN lobby, but every time I tried to join a game I would get "Join Failed." And anyone trying to join a game hosted by me would get the same failure message.

I have no idea what could be causing this, except perhaps for the fact that I am using a wireless connection to go online. Could that be affecting Emperor?

Some common issues that I've had with Emperor being fussy about connecting with other people on a LAN, wireless or otherwise, have been solved by simply ensuring that every person on the LAN is a member of the same workgroup.  I just name mine "LAN", or "Workgroup" (which I believe is the default).

Now the Wireless connection may set you up on a different workgroup.  Might be worth checking the settings there to see if that helps.

No it doesn't. Your computer can only be part of one domain / workgroup. It's a computer wide setting not network adapter related.

What type of router / firewall / modem are you using ?

I'm using the firewall integrated into McAffe Security Center; but I doubt it is the firewall's fault, since the game wouldn't work even after I turned the firewall off. I'll check my modem and such - I'm using a laptop (Dell Inspiron 600m), so the modem was included with the computer upon purchase. I've never had network problems before.

Our second PC is wireless and I never really had a problem at all yet with it and Emp.
