I'd like to point out that, in the politics of Taiwan, pro-unification does not mean pro-China. On the contrary. The main pro-unification party is the Kuomintang, which fought against the Maoists in the Chinese Civil War. They cling to the extremely unlikely idea of re-unification on their terms, and it is that kind of re-unification that has significant support in Taiwan.

while the US and the rest of the west supports the move...

No they don't, like your article says the US supports the status quo.

This is a lot ado about nothing. Neither side really wants a war. China would probably find itself on the losing end and risk civil war, there's hundreds of millions of peasants living on the fringe of poverty that could revolt at the slightest provocation.

Taiwan would dissolve in a smoldering fireball after China decides to launch their 700 missiles they've pointed at the "rebellious province".

Plus while China would love to usurp Taiwan as another cash cow colony like Hong Kong, they wouldn't risk upsetting the global community by actually carrying out what they're saying. Their double digit economic growth is only possible because of foreign trade.

China isn't going to war over Taiwan. They have little to win from it, and to much to lose.
