Acriku
There's some good retail products: http://www.avi-vcd.com/But I haven't heard of a shareware/freeware program that performs such a task.
Megashrap
I use Nero for all of mine, but DVD Santa is great for doing that sort of thing on the fly. Doesen't get any easier than that. http://www.dvdsanta.com/Screenshot of what I mean by easy to do....http://www.dvdsanta.com/images/screen3l.jpg

Megashrap
can it do the same thing backwards too? .vob files to .avi ?Yea it does that too either way .vob to .avi. I believe. It's been a while since I used it. It is great for fast easy burning, but the drawback is there is no editing part to the program like inserting scene selects, covers etc. but can't beat it for fast dvd burning.
